Maylee Wilds and Remi Petett learn about teamwork

2017-07-11 - Taylor County, KY - Photo by Calen McKinney, Public Information Officer, Campbellsville Independennt Schools (CIS) .
Campbellsville Elementary School third-graders recently learned to work together as a team. Classes competed against each other to see which group could complete a puzzle first. The students took turns hopping like rabbits to the puzzle to add another piece. And the class that finished the puzzle first was named the winner. The exercise was to help the students learn the importance of teamwork. CES third-grader Maylee Wilds, at left, races to her class puzzle, with some help from Remi Petett, who will be a kindergartener at CES in August. Third-grade teachers are Doretha Sanders, Patty Haley, Marcia Sharp and Hannah Jones.

More on the Alhambra and Cozy Theatres

Click on headline for story with two photos, one of Cozy, the other of the Alhambra - which may not be the photo(s) to which Teri Close Tidwell refers.

Teri Close Tidwell writes:

I want to make a clarification to Larry's information in the caption below the picture. My father, Robert Close, ran both the Cozy and the Alhambra theaters until they were sold by the Sanders estate at auction in Feb. 1964. My mother, Ina Elizabeth Sanders Close, was one of four daughters of Paul Sanders, who with his father bought the Alhambra in 1922. My grandmother, Cornelia Jones Sanders, built the Cozy in the early '40s. Just wanted to clarify.Thank you, --Teri Close Tidwell

Kenny Absher lauds ACSO, State & County employees

Kenny Absher

I think Sheriff Moss and his staff do a tremendous job for the citizens of Adair County without a lot of credit and as we all know those who talk too much get heard the least, but I do think a little more reporting is needed.
Also the State and County employees who mow the road right of ways do a job above and beyond their limited budgets. Thank all of you.

Patent for the Triplett and Scott repeater carbine

Yesterday, Rollin Knifley tipped us off to an interesting bit of Columbia history: Triplett & Scott repeater carbine invented by Adair Countians. Rollin wrote, "According to Wikipedia, the weapon is called the Triplett and Scott repeater carbine. It says the weapon was invented by Louis Triplett and William Scott of Columbia KY. It was issued to the Kentucky Home Guard Troops to protect the supply lines of the Union Army under General Sherman's command."

Now, reader Michael Potter tracked down a copy of the original patent for the Triplett and Scott repeater carbine (PDF). Letters Patent 45,361 was awarded to Louis Triplett of Columbia, Kentucky on December 6, 1864, for "improvement in magazine or self-loading fire-arms." The PDF contains drawings and several pages describing the invention.
