KY Afield Outdoors: Cumberland Striped Bass heating up

By Lee McClellan

Frankfort, KY - Few things in the outdoors in Kentucky can top being on Lake Cumberland at daybreak on a summer morning, watching a planer board or large bobber disappear, followed by the sound of a slipping drag.

Striped bass pull like no other fish in Kentucky and landing a 22-inch or longer keeper brings a rush of adrenaline that gives you the shakes. Now in the fourth year of normal water levels since the drawdown to repair Wolf Creek Dam, the striped bass in Lake Cumberland are well on the way to returning to the glory days.

"The striped bass in Lake Cumberland are doing great," said John Williams, Southeastern Fisheries District biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "There are multiple year classes in the lake with many keepers over 22 inches. We are getting more fish over 30 inches. Their body condition is fantastic."

JIM: Gone Glimmering. For the Adair Co. Fair, history repeats?

For ye of little faith, who do not see the possibilities for the Adair County Fair to rise Phoenix-like from its ashes in the 21st Century as it did one hundred years ago, there heart-warming County Fair Salvation in reading what happened to the fair one hundred years ago - maybe the darkest day ever for the event. JIM uncovers some remarkable answers to questions most of us have asked, but never gotten satisfactory answers, such as the symbolism of landmarks, of the four stone pillars, and of why one great oak carries even more meaning than its majestic and enduring strength could ever suggest: It was the monument to the fifth man, a man with the highest calling, a newspaper editor, of course. This is a story of great sadness, but one worth reading time and again. It is a message of great hope.

By JIM

With the Adair County Fair looming large on the event horizon, albeit in vastly different venues, the retrospect below from June 1917 about the then-recent demise of the time-honored event seems appropriate. Just as the Fair arose Phoenix-like from "ashes" a century ago from the sale of the fairgrounds, so it has again in 2017.

Willard Jessee: Mystery Swimming Hole is Coffey Hole

Comments re photo 73426 Where in the world is this mystery swimming hole Willard Jessee writes:
Coffey Hole , Russell Creek on the Old Columbia/Russell Springs Road. - Willard Jessee
Thanks, Willard Jessee. We'll post your answer with the rest of the answers. If it's the right answer, the Mystery Photo Puzzle Master for this puzzle will give us a ring and immortalize the correct answer with a proclamation right with the picture. The photo looked easy, when we posted it, but we hadn't considered how often a ladder up a tree was a necessity in the Olden Days, when creeks were deeper, when the swimming holes were measured by whether they were "over your head" or not. - EW
