Harry Furkins says sharing necessary until bypass complete On trucks and downtown Comments re article 91047 Letter FM2 wouldnt exist without those big trucks Harry Furkins writes: In my 33 years of trucking, I did deliver freight in and around down town Columbia.Mostly to the factories, but sometimes in the alley behind Rudys.I could deliver to several shops from there.Getting to the alley was a chore,l et alone backing 60 ft. of truck through the alley.Allen Taylor seemed to always be the first on the scene.Getting around the courthouse was a trip too.The best solution would be a bypass around Columbia.I don't think that will happen anytime soon. For now we will have to share the road good or bad,be patient,be courteous, and give the trucks some room - Harry FurkinsThanks, Mr. Furkins for your comments. As you seem to understand so well, there is no effort to stop deliveries in downtown, only to keep through trucks out. There's a huge difference. And, when you mention a bypass, I would assume you are speaking of the one missing link in a "ring road" around Columbia. It's the element which was needed most, was cheapest to build, and should have been the first element in the system: The Eastern Bypass. It's just 2 a little over two miles long, would extend from KY 55 north near Betty's OKCC and will connect with the Cumberland Parkway near the McDonald's Billboard in the WB Lane east of Columbia. With so much talk of infrastructure now, it might be a good time to go for it again. And yes, for now, there's a need to now to share the road until a better solution is found. Practice the Golden Rule - think what Jesus would do. - EW 2017-06-13 04:00:12 | Comments | Printable version
