Susan Melanie Whalen, 57, Russell County, KY (1969-2017)

She was a homemaker. She was a native of Largo, FL, the daughter of the late Arnold & Gladys Mae Foxx Bailey. Her husband, Kenneth Whalen, Jr., survives. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII 92nd Evacuation Hospital Unit. He was the son of the late James & Mattie Burbridge Young, of the Zion Community, five miles south of Columbia on KY 55 S Road. He was the widower of Edna Young, his wife of 54 years. He was a retiree of Shamrock Construction Co.and Churchill Downs.

Chris Sallee, 41, Taylor County, KY (1975-2017)

Chris was a former restaurant employee and had most recently been employed as a roofer. His artistic talents were evident in his drawings and his musical ability. Chris loved all types of music and during high school, he was a percussionist in the band. He also enjoyed watching the UK Wildcats. Families invited to StoryWalk(c) at Jim Blair Center

Families are invited to take a StoryWalk(c) at the Jim Blair Community Recreation Center, 901 Hudson St; Columbia, KY. The long, lazy days of summer offer great opportunities for family time and learning outside of the school classroom.

One such opportunity is being offered locally at the Jim Blair Community Recreational Center as the walking track at the center recently became the site of a unique family activity known as a StoryWalk(c). A StoryWalk(c) provides "an innovative and delightful way for children (and adults) to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time".

She professed her faith at Griders Chapel Church and also attended the Creelsboro Christian Church when able. She retired from Osh Gosh where she worked for many years. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, the outdoors, and loved being surrounded with family and friends. She was the daughter of the late Wint & Lela Hadley Spoon.

Paving to begin next week on KY 80 in Russell Co, LY

One-Lane work zone, from Adair-Russell line to KY 80/U.S. 127 intersection. Work will involve 'Cape-sealing' a process designed to extend the life of pavement.

We counted at nearly 100 kids and adults who took part in the "Learn about Korea" lunch at the Square Meals Cafe at the Farmers Market on the Square, Saturday June 3, 2017.

Brothers Ty and Gabe Coleman along with their mom Maggie Coleman were our special guests at the cafe. The kids played a Korean game "Yutnori" and talked about their experiences traveling in Ty's home country of Korea.

I agree on both points you made and would like to reiterate a third one:
  • First, American commerce rolls on 18 wheelers and that is good.
  • Second, the less unnecessary thru traffic (including cars) clogging our Historic Downtown, the more user friendly it will become to business and other concerns.
  • Third, as I've said for years, "if you run two major highways with no stop signs through Greenwood Mall, it would be doomed to failure."

Raymond M. Broussard, Jr., Taylor Co., KY/Calcasieu Parish, LA (1950-2017)

He professed faith in Christ and was of the Catholic faith. Mr. Broussard had a love for outdoor activities such as tennis, golf, and gardening. He was also a numbers genius; he held a masters in mathematics. When it came to history, he was remarkable. He absorbed information and relayed it at every chance. He served his country honorably in Vietnam (First Calvary Division- 4th Infantry Army) and was a true American hero. His wife, Michelle Broussard, Campbellsville, KY, survives. He leaves eight direct living descendants.

Raymond Melvin Broussard, Jr., 67, of Campbellsville, KY, departed this life on Friday, June 9, 2017 at the VA hospital in Lexington, KY.

There will be a memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Broussard on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at 5pmCT/6pmET, in the chapel of the L.R. Petty Funeral Home, 1765 New Columbia Road, Campbellsville, KY 42718. Father Bill Bowling will be officiating. Mr. Broussard will be laid to rest in the Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 13, after 4pmCT/5pmET, until time for the service.

PADUCAH, KY - (9 Jun 2017) - Wickliffe, Kentucky, resident and convicted felon, Christopher Ford, was the last of six co-defendants sentenced in United States District Court this week to 240 months in prison, followed by a five year period of supervised release, by Senior Judge Thomas B. Russell, for his role in the distribution of methamphetamine, a controlled substance, and additional charges of being a felon in possession of firearms, announced United States Attorney John E. Kuhn, Jr.
