The well attended Monday, June 5, 2017, meeting of the Columbia City Council marked a significant tipping of the balance sidewalks, with the an emphasis by several members to make sidewalks a line item in the budget - for some, not just the use of "left-over" funds, but now to be one of the city's top priorities.

Jeffrey DeWayne McFarland, Casey County, KY (1975-2017)

Mr. McFarland professed faith in Christ and was an elder in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he enjoyed being a primary teacher of children. In his spare time, Mr. McFarland enjoyed fishing and working in his yard. He was the son of Frank & Alleen (Shuler) McFarland, who survive, as does his wife, Martha (Rakes) McFarland, and a son, Levi Mason of Liberty, KY

The FM2 board members have discussed the possibilities and challenges of either a mural or large format banner on this wall (or any wall) for about 2 years. We agree that it would be an incredible asset to us all - what a way to greet everyone driving into Columbia. As market manager, I have gathered a great deal of information on the subject.

What is quite interesting about this group is that few of them knew exactly where we were going, how many days at sea or in port we would be, or when we would return. They were a trusting group.

Campbellsville has a first: Ol' Red Ace Liquors package store

First for Taylor County

Campbellsville now has 31 ABC licenses, and its first Quota Retail Package Store, Ol' Red Ace Liquors, 410 S Central Avenue. The store is owned by Carl B. Bush and Joseph A Huddleston. The store also has an NQ Malt Liquor License. The effective date of both licenses was May 5, 2017. According to information at LLicense Look Up The store is now open.

This is the anniversary of the catastrophic Gradyville Flood. Every year we stop and remember the great loss of life that ended the lives of so many and changed the course of the community forever. Much as been written of the event. The following two articles, from neighboring county papers, a presented here as a memorial.

Last Friday night a cloud burst in the valley of Big Creek, Adair County, almost destroyed the town of Gradyville. Several families being wiped out. Ex-Senator Nell lost his home and all his family, five in number. Senator Nell would have perished also but for the fact that he was away visiting a patient, being a physician.

(Wed 7 Jun 2017) Gov. Matt Bevin said Tuesday he is still committed to overhauling Kentucky's tax code and will call a special legislative session to do so sometime after the middle of August.

Bevin made his intentions known by sending a letter to all state lawmakers.

Sharon Whitehurst: Calkins kittens have impressed Willis

The kittens Sharon Whitehurst vouches for, have earned the grudging respect of Willis, perhaps Adair County's most celebrated feline, made famous in a series of stories which have fascinated CM readers since 2011. Willis took the Whitehurst family into his care in early summer 2010. (See his introduction - The Whitehurst Diary: Raising Willis the Cat)

Farmers Market on the Square opens Wednesdays, too, today

Tastes of Adair County season are here in earnest.

The Farmer's Market on the Square will be open also on Wednesdays starting today, Wednesday, June 7, 2017, 1pm-6pmCT, in addition to the Saturday FM2.

Wednesday FM2's will continue through September, Saturday markets will continue through October. The market is thriving in its new, greatly expanded location in the Municipal Parking Lot, corner Campbellsville & Merchant Streets.

Locally sourced fresh vegetables and fruits are now offered four days a week, with two Farmers Markets on the Square, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and two Adair County Farmers Markets, on Tuesday and Friday mornings
