Martha Lacy: Littering problem is bad on Breeding Loop

Martha Lacy writes:
A friend and I were driving the other day, the garbage on the side of the roads was awful. I live in the Breeding area and on Breeding Loop it looks like a dump. It's not just this area; we were on another side of the county that day. Why can't people keep it till they get to a garbage can and put it in. We have a beautiful county and let's keep it that way. Maybe we need a garbage can at the stop signs; no that wouldn't work, people would bring their bags and put it in them. Please keep our roads clean so visitors can see how pretty our county is!!! Thanks. - A concerned Adair County Resident, Martha Lacy

As a result of this change, we will not hold a community Ash Wednesday service this year. Holy Week is April 10-14, 2017. Connie Scott, Trinity UMC Secretary

Joyce Coomer: Spy cameras too costly for littering

And surveillance cameras smack too much of Big Brother. People need to act like they have more intelligence than amoebas

Joyce Coomer writes:
Cameras would be too costly as there would have to be at least one every quarter mile on every road in the county. And, yes, surveillance cameras smack too much of Big Brother . People need to act like they're more intelligent than amoebas . . . Joyce M. Coomer

Joyce Coomer on littering: $500 fine has been in place for years

Joyce Coomer writes:
The roadsides and city streets both are strewn with litter. A $500 fine (and I have seen signs for $1,500) has been in place for years. Unless a law officer sees someone throw something from their vehicle and can prove the item came from that person's vehicle, it is nearly impossible to enforce the fine for littering. - Joyce M. Coomer
Thanks. - Apparently, as Sheriff Harrison Moss says, people don't litter when they see a police car. Are we ready for strategically placed video surveillance? Or does that smell too much of an authoritarian, big brother state? - EW

Jennifer Parker: Fines need to be imposed for littering

Jennifer Parker writes:
I totally agree! It shows a complete lack of respect by people for our County, State or wherever they are when they choose to litter. Sadly there are also residents in Adair County who prefer to litter even their own property with mounds of garbage and trash, rather than learn how to dispose of it properly. I'm not quite sure why they want to literally choose to live in it. It really takes little time out of ones day to use a trash can. If in a vehicle, it's quite simple to wait until one gets where they are going to dispose of trash properly. The fines need to be imposed! --Jennifer Parker
