Runner says concrete sidewalks harder on joints than blacktop

Mike Bradshaw writes:
As a runner I do this as well. The concrete sidewalks are harder than the blacktop on the highways. So much harder on joints. Just yesterday I had to run on the sidewalk, (3miles) and my lower back and hips and legs hurt all evening. Today I run 4 mile, and all on blacktop, with no pain. I do hope that they are dressing to be seen, and running against traffic. --Mike Bradshaw

Reader says Wed 21 Dec 2016 CM edition buoyed his day

Writer notes the art of Robert Ellis, the word-sketch and photos of Sharon Whitehurst, the reminisce of growing up on "The Ridge" by Billy Joe Fudge, and CM photo, all in ColumbiaMagazine.com. Daily News for Wednesday, December 21, 2016

By a known-to-us reader who wishes to remain anonymous

My yesterday started early morning with the visual feast of Mr. Robert Ellis' breathtaking Sparksville-centric photographs. It ended yesterday evening with Ms. Whitehurst's brilliantly crafted winter's solstice word-sketch and accompanying photographs.

Those two features, along with the Billy Joe Fudge well-told reminisce of growing up on "The Ridge" and ye olde CM editor's image (and cutline) of Burkesville's Hill Street snakeskin icicle, buoyed my day considerably above the "slings and arrows" that happenstanced along.

Carol Perkins: Only in a small town - like Edmonton

Unlike her Susan & Carol Radio Show partner, Carol admits she that keeping 'stuff' is one of her vices. But this year, she responded to two calls, one for warm clothing to give away and two, a request for items for those who live in the Bowling Park Shelter. She learned, she says, more of the reasons why she loves the caring nature of small town people.
The next earlier column: Carol Perkins: Parents went 'all out' for Christmas
By Carol Perkins

Tis the season to be jolly! Fa La La La La, La La La La

Compared to other times, this is the season when most people are happier and more generous than any other time of the year.

Only a few weeks ago, one of the local members of our Edmonton Square Motorcycle Club asked me to announce on our radio show for those who have extra warm clothing to donate them so his group could deliver to homeless men, women, and children living in a wooded area in Louisville. Not only did the general public respond, Edmonton Baptist Church members brought in enough for two different loads, and many items were new!

Poetry by Robert Stone: Life needs a moderation

Life needs a moderation : a word-list sonnet
by Robert Stone
How extroverts can scarf baloney down
and think they swallow morning manna feast
reflects a hubris great enough to drown
well-armored hombre and defenseless least.

Yet introverts perfunctory display
deplorable disclosures of disdain,
that blast like clarinets above the fray
of roaring fires where firewalls are in vain.

The good life needs a moderation kept
from either way extremes would paint the best
for those who are the sturdy hold precept
that consequences hard must be addressed.

That nothing can exist contexture free
demands our trying always more to see.

~ Robert Stone, 21 December 2016
Perfunctory - blast - clarinet - deplorable - baloney (bologna) - extrovert - firewall - scarf - manna - hombre

This poem was written for Poetry in the Boro, Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The words were chosen by the audience at the November meeting.
