Personalized Learning: Not such a new thing in primary classes An Essay by ACPC Principal Patty Jones Personalized Learning, Differentiation, Individualized Learning, Virtual Learning--all ways of saying that we are striving to do what is best for every single student when it comes to education. These are all variations on the current "buzz words" in education today. However, for self-contained primary level teachers these are not "buzz words" or are they anything new at all. As a 32-year veteran of education, I was doing small group, individualized, and differentiated learning in my fourth grade classroom in 1984. I guess I was "personalized before personalized was cool." I was not alone then and primary teachers have not been alone in the practice over the past 30 years. Comment on Engineering and the human factor Comments re article 86092 Engineering and the human factor Jim Hudson writes: Surely this comment is only a joke. If not, can you imagine not striping a three lane wide highway and allowing high speed traffic to use it? It would be utter chaos. Highways are vastly different from sidewalks. - Jim HudsonThanks, Mr. Hudson: Good comment, except I don't think the article questioned the striping and signage - rather what some consider deadly flaws in the road design itself. - EW 2016-10-05 14:15:47 | Comments | Printable version

Squarecrow success an inspiration Shannon Sexton writes: During the hustle and bustle of each work day, we often lose sight of the small things that bring us together as a community. Who would of thought that a bunch of straw creatures would create such a response from local businesses and organizations or draw such a crowd from out of town? It really has been fun for the StateLine Steel crew and me to participate. I find myself driving around the square daily just to see what's new.Comments re article 86093 2016 Squarecrows setting new records by the day 2016-10-05 13:01:44 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Engineering and the human factor By Joyce Coomer No engineering idea, no matter how well planned out, no matter how well it looks on paper, no matter how wonderful it sounds, is not complete nor can be effectively utilized unless the quirks and oddities of humans are considered thoroughly. Case in point . . . an employee of a northern university told me that when the university put up a new building, whether it be classrooms, dormitory or administration, they would not lay sidewalks until after a full school term, then would lay sidewalks where paths had been made by students and staff between existing buildings and the new building. Seems to me someone should've personally observed traffic patterns on Highway 55 for several months before marking lanes . . . - Joyce M.
