Epicurean Kentuckian: Watermelon like they sell in Russell Co.

2016-08-08 - The Fruit Market, 2400 S Hwy 127, Russell Springs, KY 42642 - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c). One might first guess this watermelon came from Swan Pond Bottom, the section below Wolf Creek Dam which used to be the watermelon capitol of Kentucky. But Joe Branscum, proprietor of The Fruit Market, said that this one is a bit brought on - it was grown in Allen County, KY. At 100 pounds, it will provide watermelon for a mighty big family reunion. The fame which prompted a very excity visit was word spread by a trusted foodie, who pines from the fabulous sandwiches and by-the-pound salad bar at the Fruit Market. It was past closing time when this photo was made, but a sandwich was cut to order. It was up there with the best. Will seek further advice from this tipster. And, while we can't vouch for the quality of the watermelon, only it's looks, we can vouch for a big cantaloupe from The Fruit Market: It was a good as cantaloupe could be. - EW

Thank you Maury for your inspiration. Linda and I have had faith all along that someway you would find a way not to let winter ruin your fitness plan. Hope you send a photo when the man in Greensburg delivers the machine. - ED

KSP wants motorists aware of back-to-school travel

Click headline for full article with tips for parents and drivers about school bus safety.

By Sgt. Michael Webb

Frankfort, KY - As thousands of Kentucky students head back to school this week, Kentucky State Police is urging motorists to remain cautious behind the wheel and help prevent injuries and deaths that result each year from school bus-related crashes.

Last year, Kentucky had 852 school bus related crashes, resulting in 297 injuries and three deaths. With school starting in many communities, KSP Spokesman Sgt. Michael Webb is urging motorists to be alert for loading and unloading school buses.

"Nothing strikes fear in a trooper's mind like getting a call that there has been a crash involving a school bus," says Webb. "As a parent myself, I know how precious those children are, and when they get on the bus, you place their safety in someone else's hands."

Happy Anniversary, Donna Joyce Feese

August 8, 1966 was a very special day in my life
It was the day when that special someone finally became my wife
It's hard to believe how time has flown by
I could never replace her so I won't even try

For fifty short years she's been by my side
My best friend, my lover, my boss and my bride
Through good times and bad times and times in between
She's always my rock and the pillar on which I lean

When you see us together I hope you can see
The love of my life she will always be
Everyone tells me and I have to agree
How blessed I am that God picked her for me
