KY Afield Outdoors: Use public hunting areas in turkey season

By Kevin Kelly

Frankfort, KY - Like deer and elk, the restoration of wild turkeys in Kentucky is a remarkable success story.

The statewide flock now numbers around 220,000 turkeys and telecheck harvest records show spring turkey hunters have taken an average of 31,719 birds over the past five years. The statewide harvest was up slightly last year over the previous spring as hunters topped 30,000 birds for the fifth time in the past six years.

This year, the general spring turkey season opens statewide on April 16 and closes May 8, but hunters age 15 and younger are first up. The special youth-only season runs the weekend of April 2-3.

Trent Booher: Always smiling - even more today

The Adair County School district campus is looking it's best now. More than ever, it's compared to pretty college campuses and it's become a part of the everyday life of Adair Countians with its parklike setting. Trent Booher is one of the big reasons the campus - "the precious gem it has transformed into over the past few years," is now a destination not only for students, teachers and staff, but the community, and other community's wanting to emulate the success here.

Effort underway in Fairplay to try Moonglow pears in Kentucky

Write has had varying success rates with fruit trees here - with pear trees doing best.

By Charles Marshburn

I have planted a couple of pear trees. Don't believe they are an old fashion variety.

These pear trees are the Moon Glow variety. That is a very tasty pear which grows well in the Atlanta area.

Having planted peaches, apples and pears, here, I've had varying success: The pears seem to be doing fairly well, the peaches are in second place and the apples are a distant third.

My cherry trees that I have planted are struggling.

Suitable replacements for the invasive flowering pear trees

Billy Joe Fudge has long been an advocate for better stewardship of the countryside, with the Kieffer or Old Fashioned Pear Trees as an icon embracing a longterm management of our woodlands, and especially the urban forest. There are many kindred spirits. This column has a number of links to his works in his Kentucky Color series. Along the way, we've also found Pear Tree Chronicles, Album: 2010 in life of century old tree, about a pear tree in Gradyville, written by Sharon Whitehurst. Billy Joe Fudge thinks it's time for a new emphasis to put our energies promoting trees with old fashioned values.
It looks like Billy Joe Fudge is right again, or so it would seem from listening to comments. He's an advocate for old fashioned pears, like the one at left he photographed on Lindsey Wilson Colleges A.P. White Campus six years ago, at left
