Old Fashioned Pear Tree in comparison

2016-03-26 - Metcalfe County, KY - Photo By Ed and Linda Waggener.
The landscape is filled with ornamental pear trees lining driveways and property lines, but the stately old fashioned pear tree, in the center, is still my favorite in looks, and of course, in the taste of its fruit. The original pear trees remind me of my Grandmother's pear tree just outside the kitchen door of the farmhouse. We watched the big tree go from bear winter branches to having little buds, then growing thousands of blossoms almost overnight. The blossoms magically turned into baby fruit, and as the spring season flourished, they'd grow to full size, gain a hint of yellow color as they ripened and dropped to the ground where I'd gather them, fighting off the occasional wasp. Those memories remind me of one sweet result of that chore, Alice Bell Royce Marcum's yummy pear preserves. Wish I'd paid more attention to her labor and recipe so that taste could be replicated today. -- LW
