LWC Baseball tops Cumberlands 4-3

Atwell's walk-off single lifts No. 8 Lindsey Wilson Baseball over Cumberlands 4-3 in extra innings

By Charlie Balcom

With the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 10th inning, Austin Atwell delivered a walk-off single up the middle to score Alec Salcedo from second and hand the Lindsey Wilson baseball team a 4-3 walk-off win over Cumberlands (Ky.) on Friday evening at Egnew Park.

The win puts the eighth-ranked Blue Raiders (23-10, 5-2 MSC) currently alone atop the Mid-South Conference standings in first place. Cumberlands falls to 20-11 overall with a 3-4 record in conference play with the loss.

Lindsey Wilson was in complete control throughout most of the game thanks to a dominating pitching performance from starter Scott Sebald. The senior went eight innings allowing just one run on four hits while striking out a season-high 12, just two off of his career high of 14.

But the game changed dramatically in the top of the ninth when Blue Raider closer James Doubet struggled on the mound and the Patriots tagged him for five hits including a game-tying two-RBI single from Stone Osborne.

Cumberlands loaded the bases with no outs to start the ninth on three-straight singles before Osborne's hit. After a shallow fly out, Kevin Pantoja singled to load the bases again. Lindsey Wilson finally got out of the inning after a ball hit up the middle was snagged by Fabian Chirino, who stepped on second for the first out before firing over to first for the second and ending the threat on a double play to keep it a 3-3 game.

The Blue Raiders nearly ended things in the bottom of the ninth after Javoni Thomas laced a ball to shallow centerfield, but Cumberlands' Landon Byron made a diving catch to prevent the run from scoring from second and send the game into extras.

Cumberlands puts two runners on base in the top half of the 10th, but were unable to push any runs across before Atwell's game-winning hit in the bottom half of the inning. Salcedo reached on a Patriot error to start the 10th and Edgar Lebron moved him up to second on a single before Atwell sent the first pitch he saw back up the middle that took a strong hop to move just outside of the reach of the Patriot shortstop as the ball bounced into centerfield.

Earlier in the game, the Patriots dented the score board first in the top of the fifth on a two-out double by Reed Spata for the 1-0 lead.

The Blue Raiders answered in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run from Chirino to tie the game at 1-1.

Cumberlands attempted to retake the lead in the top half of the sixth after Jose Alonzo sent a ball to deep left fiend with a runner on second and two outs, but Salcedo made a leaping over-the-shoulder catch at the warning track to keep it a 1-1 game.

Lindsey Wilson kept the momentum rolling in the bottom of the sixth after Salcedo led off with a single and moved to second on a stolen base. Aaron Ashton chased home Salcedo on a double, and Atwell followed with a single to score Ashton to give the Blue Raiders a 3-1 lead.

The game would go scoreless from there before Cumberlands scored their two runs in the ninth to tie it.

Doubet (3-1) picked up the win in relief, allowing two runs on seven hits. Cumberlands' Jeff Rivera took the loss after entering in the eighth and tossing two and 1/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits.

The Blue Raiders and Patriots are back in action on Saturday with a doubleheader to conclude the three-game conference series. First pitch is scheduled for noon CT.
