Rickie Williams on going wet: Is this progress?

Response to: Shannon Sexton: Dry county/meth use story not a stretch

By Rickie Williams
Personal commentary

I want to work from the following sentence of a post On ColumbiaMagazine.com...
"We at PAC are working to bring the LEGALIZED AND REGULATED sale of alcohol in Adair County to a vote in hopes we can create an environment that will attract new industry and tourism as well as help support what we already have."

Particularly this portion of the sentence..." in hopes we can create an environment that will attract new industry and tourism as well as help support what we already have."
A reader can not know the writer's exact intent, but here is how the words hit me...

C. Marshburn: More news of meth abuse than alcohol problems

Charles Marshburn writes
Shannon, I really appreciate your reply to Mr. Rosenbaum. I also agree with your reply. The meth problem in Adair County is proven weekly with the arrests made in the county for crimes comitted under the influence of that drug or for the possession of that drug. Alcohol abuse does not show up in print as often as meth abuse in the media in this county. Am I wrong? Prove it! - Charles Marshburn

Shannon Sexton: Dry county/meth use story not a stretch

'When times are tough and people cannot make a living wage, sometimes they resort to harvesting ginseng and deer, sometimes they resort to cooking meth.' - SHANNON SEXTON
Comments re article 79984 D Rosenbaum questions connection Being dry higher meth use>

Shannon Sexton, Chairperson, PAC
News from PAC - Progress in Adair County

In response to Mr. D. Rosenbaum:

As PAC chairperson, I shared the article concerning higher meth use in dry counties for many reasons, some of which are very personal to me.

It is my belief that a disadvantaged area offering minimal industrial opportunities with decent paying jobs cultivates a breeding ground for illegal activity.

Although I disagree with your comment that the article we shared was a stretch, I do however agree with your statement that you could prove ginseng harvesting and deer hunting is also higher in a dry county.

When I was young my mother lost her job due to a factory closing, just as many other local citizens did. My dad harvested ginseng and deer. The ginseng was sold for extra money. That extra money paid for school supplies, auto repairs, and other things we needed at the time.

Writer agrees with Ben Arnold commentary on election

Comment in response to: Ben Arnold: Unaccounted for ballots could have changed mayoral election outcome

James Rowell writes
Ben is right on this matter and it shows what kind of leaders we have right now . . . And it's still the good ol' boy way of doing things, meaning we the people don't matter when it comes to the truth and change for our county. A good house cleaning is needed for the good of the county. We need real leaders, not what we keep getting. Thank you. - James Rowell

D. Rosenbaum questions connection: Being dry, higher meth use

Dave Rosenbaum writes:
Your lead this morning links to an article that starts, "A new University of Louisville study has revealed a connection between counties that prohibit alcohol sales having greater instances of methamphetamine lab busts and arrests." A connection? I just bet I could prove that the ginseng harvest is higher in dry counties and, likely, the number of deer killed per capita during the deer season is higher in dry counties. I'm sure I can conclusively prove by rigorous statistics that basketball coaches in wet counties are more likely to flip off the opposing fans than are the coaches in dry counties. This article is really a stretch. - Dave Rosenbaum
