JIM: A response (of sorts) to questions recently posed by Mr. Billy Joe Fudge

JIM gives a fascinating account from past Adair County Fairs, but actually comes down hard on both sides of the notion that the presence of a carnival adversely affects moral rectitude, stating, equivocally: "As far as the collective moral rectitude of the fair-going crowd being an inverse function of the presence (or absence) of a carnival - that's a tough question, one better answered by the Great Minds of Adair."

By JIM, who studies such matters

The following is a response to a couple of Large Questions recently posed here A Question for Jim on moral rectitude, presence of carnivals by Mr. Billy Joe Fudge in regard to an earlier CM piece.

The astute reader will note that the author, in best political fashion, uses many words to obfuscate the obvious: that he doesn't have a clue what might be the answers to Mr. Fudge's questions.
My Swiss cheese memory (getting Swiss cheesier by the day, thanks in part, no doubt, to the ever-increasing amount of direct sunlight hitting my increasingly less hirsute pate), can not dredge up any recollection of having read about a carnival being a part of the Columbia / Adair County Fair during the first 20 years or thereabout of the last century.

Carol Perkins: On spending money

'Her Christmas Cards still bring in spending money. There was stumbles along the way, when she start to go big time, dispatched her husband to Louisville ill prepared for the interview she set up, and learned a valuable lesson about being prepared. Still she says, she was more naive than dumb.
Next previous Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: In a small town, it's not about money

By Carol Perkins

By Carol Perkins

Spending money. In this statement it means one thing: "He was spending his own money on the car." In this statement it is different: "I need some spending money." I want to talk about spending money where spending is an adjective.

Mike Watson: Old Joseph Turner settlement on Crocus

Photo with complete story

By Mike Watson
Adair County Historian

In searching through old photos I found this one (accompanying photo) of the Old Joseph Turner settlement on Crocus. I took this in the late 1970s or early 1980s, not many years prior to the devastating fire that completely destroyed all evidence, save for the chimneys. Constructed of log, with parts of it going back to the first Turners on the site, it was one of the oldest buildings in that end of the county. A great loss to all, especially the many, many descendants of the Turner clan.

KSP Increasing Patrols During Labor Day Weekend

By Sherry H. Bray

Frankfort, KY - The national campaign Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over runs through Labor Day weekend and is aimed at reducing deaths and injuries caused by motorists driving drunk or impaired by drugs. During the 2014 Labor Day holiday, there were six alcohol-related highway deaths on Kentucky roadways. Statewide, law enforcement officers arrested 55 people for DUI during that same time period. The 2015 Labor Day enforcement period begins at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept.4 and extends through Monday, Sept. 7 at 11:59 p.m.

Kentucky State Police Operations Director Lt. Col. Mike Crawford encourages families to enjoy the holiday while also taking precautions to protect everyones' safety.

"We know there are going to be family celebrations during Labor Day where alcohol will be present, so your best bet is to always designate a sober driver before the parties begin," says Crawford.
