60th annual all night singing at Red Lick UMC - 5 Sep 2015

60 years ago, people drove from miles around to attend this huge event, cars lined the roads of Mosby Ridge. The church would have all the windows up and doors open as people stood on the backs of pick-up trucks and on the porch after the church house was filled. It was said the sounds of music were heard for miles as the singing bounced off all the hills and hollars of the Adair/Metcalfe County Line! Singers invited to come and join!

by Missy Lemmon

Red Lick United Methodist Church, 3976 Mosby Ridge Road, Edmonton, KY is holding their 60th Annual All Night Singing, at 7pmCT on Saturday, September 5, 2015. We hope to make this our largest turn-out on record. Red Lick has reached a huge landmark of hosting their All Night Singing for 60 continuous years and we need singers.

Letter: Be loyal to your town and it will grow

Wants six day a week shopping (bring back 'Blue Laws') and Columbia back to its Old Fashioned Roots

Jeffery Bray writes:
Walmart was a bad move years ago. It killed downtown shopping on the square. I think Columbia needs to go back to its old fashion roots. Monday through Saturday, everything needs to be closed on Sundays except hospital, nursing home police depts. It worked 40 years ago. Sunday is the Lord's day, and a day of rest, and I truly believe thats how God wants it. Example: look at Betty's parking lot Monday thru Saturday. She has loyal customers, because she closed on Sunday. --Jeffery Bray

I agree with Patty. This town has nothing for kids but juvy when they go to other towns and get in trouble. We need something here. The other towns are getting Adair County's money when these kids go out of town to movies, skating, etc and it also makes it more dangerous for them, out traveling just to have some fun! - Joyce Williams Martin

Remembering Peggy Tarter: Despite clutter, she could find anything

About: Peggy Ann Tarter, 78, Casey County, KY (1936-2015)

By Frances Salyers, as related to Ed Waggener

It was sad to learn of the passing of Peggy Tarter, proprietor of Tarter's Store at Dunnville. What a wonderful lady. Her store was cluttered and stacked so much that there would usually be just one pathway from the front to the back.

If you were looking a a particular item, you almost always had to ask her for help - no way to find it on your own.

But she, on the other hand, could find anything, whether you asked her for a deck of Rook Cards or a new wick for a kerosene lantern - she knew right where it was. She will be missed by all those of my time. - Frances Salyers - proprietor, D & F Grocery & Deli, 4731 Edmonton Road, Gradyville, KY.

Mike Watson: Mr. Cullins discovered a highly useful citizen

An interesting bit of history from Brush Creek area, Green County, KY from Mike Watson

By Mike Watson, Adair County Historian

A Prolific Family - Mr. J.C. Cullins, a well known stock man of the Smith's Grove neighborhood, has just returned from a business trip to Green County, this State. While absent, he spent one night with an old gentleman on Brush Creek and there learned from him an interesting piece of family history:

The gentleman's name is James Bennett, and he has been married three times, has twenty-seven living children, sixty-five grandchildren, and one hundred and twenty-seven great grandchildren, and he himself is only sixty, while his present wife is about thirty-five years old.

A short time since this clever old farmer and highly respected Green County citizen held a family reunion at his house, his family being so numerous as to fill both house and yard.

Mr. Bennett would have been a highly useful citizen in the early settlement of this country.

- Semi-Weekly South Kentuckian, Hopkinsville, KY, 6 July 1886, copied from Bowling Green Democrat.
