KY Afield Outdoors: Free Fishing Weekend

Events are in multiple locations. In Russell County: 29th Annual Catch a Rainbow Annual Kids Fishing Derby, 9amCT, June 6 and June 7, 2015 at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, 50 Kendall Road, Jamestown.

By Lee McClellan

FRANKFORT, KY - Free fishing weekend is one of the best avenues to introduce kids to the wonders of fishing and launch a lifelong passion. This year, Free Fishing Weekend is Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7, 2015, in Kentucky.

"Free fishing weekend is a great tool for teaching kids how to fish," said John Gutzeit, aquatic education coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "This is also a great time for those lapsed anglers who've gotten away from fishing to get fishing again and come back into the fold." Anglers across Kentucky may fish without a fishing license or need a trout permit on Free Fishing Weekend. Size and creel limits still apply during this time.

Locations across Kentucky host special fishing events on Saturday, June 6. All events are held at local time and some provide loaner equipment, free bait and food. Here is a list of fishing events held on June 6:

2015 Primary Recanvass: Results in, outcome unchanged

There were several minor changes in vote totals, but the recanvass did not affect the outcomes of the elections.

On May 28, 2015, each of Kentucky's 120 county boards of elections rechecked and recanvassed each voting machine to verify the vote totals in the May 19, 2015, Republican Primary Elections for Governor/Lieutenant Governor and Commissioner of Agriculture. The statewide recanvasses were requested by James Comer/Chris McDaniel, candidates for Governor/Lieutenant Governor, and Richard Heath, candidate for Commissioner of Agriculture.

The county boards of elections certified the results of the recanvasses to the Secretary of State's office. There were several minor changes in vote totals, but the recanvass did not affect the outcomes of the elections.

County-by-county results of both recanvasses, including any differences compared with previously reported vote totals, are available online: With the exceptions of Daviess, Fayette, Henderson, Jefferson, Kenton, Nelson and Rowan counties, which received an extension until June 1 to certify vote totals to the Secretary of State's office, the results of the recanvasses are the official returns of the counties.

All vote totals remain unofficial until they are certified by the State Board of Elections.

Smith Creek Cabin had highly successful Annual Yard Sale

By Susan Pennington

My sincere gratitude is extended to Columbia Magazine for their exemplary service in publicizing our annual event. I could not be happier with the coverage they gave to us that insured people were informed of what was happening throughout the two days we held our sale.

I can't tell you how many people came to me and told me they saw the posting through Columbia Magazine and that CM was their sole source for keeping abreast of community happenings.

I highly recommend their services for not only the quality of service they provide but the extensive reach they have in their following. It was the best value for advertising dollars I have ever spent and I can say I have never ever been so pleased with a media service!!!! Thanks again Columbia Magazine for being the best in Kentucky!!!!!!!!! - Susan Pennington, Smith Creek Cabin, 521 Old Cedartop Road, Greensburg, KY (very near the geographic center of Taylor-Adair-Green Counties, near Coburg, KY)

Where in the World 26 May 2015 - Angel in Columbia Cemetery

by Linda & Ed Waggener

We honestly thought this would be an easy Where in the World is it, but only two people correctly identified it, Lynn Harvey was the first and Debbie Selby s answer came a little later.

- Lynn Harvey wrote the day this WITW was posted: "Is this the angel in Columbia Cemetery on Campbellsville Road?"

- And very observant Debbie Selby wrote yesterday, 25 May, 2015, "This angel replica is adjacent to a grave in the Columbia City Cemetery."

Both Lynn Harvey and Debbie Selby are exactly right. We've added a photo of the whole scene, taken from the parking lot at Rob & Ken Wilkerson's Assisted Transportations Systems plant at the corner of Fairground & Campbellsville Streets, and linked it to this story. - Ed & Linda
