CJE Mike Stephens offers to chair town meeting

Sally Kemp: Suggests Town Hall meeting to answer questions

By Ed Waggener

Adair County Judge Mike Stephens offered to chair a town meeting along the lines of one outlined by Sally Kemp in an earlier article on ColumbiaMagazine.com.

"There are a lot of questions on everyone's minds," he said, "I think a town hall meeting would be a good idea. People should be able to ask everyone involved, including the the Board of Elections, to be there to make statements and answer questions," he said, and said in addition to moderating the event, he'd be willing to take questions himself.

While he could advise and request county officials involved to attend, he said, he wouldn't have any power to make them be there. "I can't see how they wouldn't want to clear the air, and move on."

He made the comments in an interview following tonight's meeting, Tuesday, April 28, 2015, of the Adair County Public Hospital Board of Trustees at Westlake Regional Hospital.

Marsha Walker: Judge Vance did research; made right decision

She agrees with Amy Pike; writer was offered city ballot even though she lives outside city limits

Marsha Walker writes:
I believe Amy Pike is correct. I, for one, was offered a city ballot by a worker, but declined it as I do not live in the city. It could be that many people like me chose not to mention their voting experiences. I believe Judge Vance did the research and made the right decision. Hopefully, the errors made during the election will not be repeated. --Marsha Walker

Sally Kemp: Suggests Town Hall meeting to answer questions

Community needs, deserves answers from Election Board and Elected officials, she says. Suggests Town Hall meeting with individuals who have the answers would be great first step
Response to: Mayoral Issue: Who's Driving the Bus(es)???

By Sally Kemp

I think there are a number of citizens who would like some answers! Not only to who's driving the bus and the reasons the Election board decided to appeal Judge Vance's ruling but to the questions I presented yesterday concerning the recent election!

A town hall meeting with individuals that have answers would be a great first step.

Amy Pike: Mr. Arnold merely stepped up to right a wrong

Personal Commentary on Election Issue - Disagrees with Jamie Isabelle that it's a matter of who has money

Amy Pike writes:
I must respectfully disagree with Jamie on this issue. Regardless of who has money and who doesn't, people were denied their civil right to vote in an election. Judge Vance reviewed all the evidence submitted and due to the length of time it took for her to reach a verdict, I'm confident that she saw proven discrepancies. It appears some want to blame the voters for not saying anything in the moment, when that is far from the truth! I know of several people who weren't allowed to vote in the city races and did bring it to the attention of the poll workers and were told that the map indicated they lived in county.

One went so far as to appeal in front of the election board on Election Day, and was told since she cast her ballot without the city races on it, that she forfeited her right to vote in those elections. If the maps, ballots, machines, or whatever were incorrect and anyone was denied the right to cast a vote, then a new election should be held. In my opinion this has nothing to do with how much money any of the candidates have or don't have and I don't see as to where Mr. Arnold as acted with entitlement. He has merely stepped up and asked for a wrong to be corrected. No one knows who will win if their is a new election. People are making this about everything but the fact that there was enough discrepancy for a Judge to overturn the election. --Amy Pike

Mayoral Issue: Who's Driving the Bus(es)???

Transparency, Please - When will answers come to let everybody in on what's going on?

Had a conversation with an Adair County voter complaining about the lack of clarity on the Mayoral litigation issue. The voter complained, "Nobody is driving the bus."

The uncertainty in our small part of the world has been likened to those seemingly endless hours after 9-11 when the public was wondering if the country had a President or not, not knowing where the president was and not knowing that (according to some local legend) Dick Cheney was safely stashed away in a secret location right here in the Commonwealth.

What's going on now. Is it just us, here at CM, or do others have the feeling that there's a huge PR Gap? Do you feel that those in authority need to make frequent statements on what is going on, let us know "who is driving the bus"? - EW

Letter: Problem with election worker

Mitzi Bault writes:
I have a problem with one worker who has worked several years where I vote. The first time I used the little flat table top computer. There were two. I was at one and a worker was showing a little lady how to use it. She said to the helper " I do not know about these." She pointed to the bottom of the page. The worker pointed and said, "This one and this one are good ones."

This same worker tried to go in the the booth with my Mom one year. My little Mom let him know, "She did not need his help."

At this years election, I was given my paper and I went the last row of tables on the back left side. No one was a round me. You know that fealing someone is watching you? I looked around and this person was behind me looking over my shoulder. I got up to take my paper to the scan box. This worker tried to get my paper. He said he could take it for me. I said "No!!!"

As I was waiting for my Mom, I was very upset about this person. I told one of the workers what I have watched this person do. She just said, "Well, I have never seen him do anything." It sure made me wonder how many people that thought he was helping, when to me he was breaking the law. --Mitzi

Sally Kemp: What does having money have to do with it?

Personal commentary

Sally Kemp writes
I wish someone would explain to me how having money and being a write in candidate created the problems associated with the election snafu! Voters denied their civil right to vote, voters given the right to vote without living in the City, voting machines having locks removed and machine tally's not matching ballots. How could this possibly be associated with Ben Arnold? - SALLY KEMP

Mike Watson: Adair Countian lost life as result of Sultana explosion

150 years ago a terrific explosion aboard the Sultana, a steam vessel on the Mississippi River, near Memphis, claimed as many as 1800 lives; most were recent prisoners of war. MW

By Mike Watson, Adair County Historian

(Written Monday, 27 April 2015) - One hundred fifty years ago, 27 April 1865, the Sultana, a side-wheel steam boat, carrying 2,427 people, burned and exploded on the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee.

As many as 1,800 lost their lives in the disaster. Many were former prisoners of war, returning home. No complete and accurate list of those lost is available as no accurate record of those who were on board survived.

Marcia Shuffett: Dr. Arnold acted after citizens told him of issues

Writer says Dr. Arnold didn't instigate problem
Personal Commentary

Marcia Shuffett writes:
Also, I would like to point out, unless I misunderstood, is that Dr. Arnold only reacted to the problems that may have happened in the voting process when citizens saw things that weren't right and went to him for help and not that Dr. Arnold was crying in his soup and angry that he had not won.

That is two distinct and completely different senarios...some people seem to think that Dr. Arnold instigated this whole thing and from what I heard and understood, nothing could be farther from the truth. - Marcia Shuffett

Jamie Isabelle comments on the Mayor's Race

Personal commentary

Jamie Isabelle writes: As I have said before, all this mayor mess boils down to one thing. That's if you have money then you should have your way.

There shouldn't even be a debate on this issue in my opinion. For starters, if Arnold was so worried about our big city of Columbia he would have been on the ballot, in black and white from the beginning like Hardwick was and the other candidates.
