Jon Halsey: Majority of Board of Election are elected officials

Jon Halsey writes:
And just how many of the members are NOT also elected officials? At last look the Sheriff, County Attorney, County Clerk and Commissioners were elected positions.

As elected officials we have the right to sit in judgement of their judgement in any public capacity that directly affects the citizenry.

I rest my case.

Letter: City residents are county residents

Jon Halsey writes:
I may be wrong but there seems to be a sense that City residents will not have to bear any of the appeal (if there should be one). As most of us realize, the City residents are also County residents and as such bear taxes from both entities and would also share in any appeal expense borne by County residents.

In addition, there will be future elections and all County residents, City and Rural can decide if the members of the Adair County Election Board who were in place at the time of the last election performed their duties with "due diligence" and are worthy of re-election. Donnie Marina Coffey: Let Judge Vance ruling stand

Says maybe residents of Columbia might decide to pay for appeal

Donnie Marina Coffey writes:
The county residents should not have to foot the bill for an appeal on Judge Judy Vance's ruling. We were not allowed to vote for the city mayor so why should we the county residents pay for the city elections mistake. Again we will not be allowed to vote for the city mayor in the new election so let the ruling stand and the city residents decide who they want for their mayor. Maybe let the residents decide if they want to pay for a appeal! - Donnie Marina Coffey

Big Event today: the meeting of the Board of Elections

Who you gonna call, if you want your opinion heard? We will be compiling a list today, starting at the top, where the buck stops where citizens may wish to voice opinions whether to appeal Judge Vance's ruling or not: 1) CJE Mike Stephens, 270-384-4703. (Judge Stephens makes statement on appeal) 2) Adair County Sheriff Harrison Moss 270-384-2776, a member of the Board of Elections. 3) County Court Clerk Lisa Greer, 270-384-2801, a member of the Board of Elections. (Her statement on Judge Vance's ruling on Mayor's Race 4) Adair County Attorney Jennifer Hutchison Corbin, 270-384-2706 who will give legal counsel to the Board of Elections. Members of the Board. Magistrates. City Councillors. Others???
Read Judge Vance's entire decision:

Arnold et al vs Adair County Board of Elections et al (PDF).

The Adair County Board of Elections will meet in Executive Session today, Wed 22 Apr 2015, at 2:30pmCT in the Adair County Courthouse Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY.

The main topic of business is not public, but the timing for the meeting suggests it will be a decision of the Board to appeal or not appeal Judge Judy Vance's ruling which voided the 4 Nov 2014 Mayoral Election. From what we have learned so far, the decision could affect every citizen of Adair County financially, though that is not the main concern. The main issue is how the democratic process is best served:
  • If an appeal is filed, the cost would be borne by Adair County Fiscal court, and any others who might be party to the appeal. The estimated cost is unclear at this time.
  • If the decision is left standing, the additional cost for the Special election, if held on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, will be relatively minor, as the election will coincide with the General election.
  • The cost of the appeal will not be borne by the City of Columbia, KY
Citizens may want to voice their opinions. We'll be posting phone numbers as received and welcome letters and comments, and new information readers may know. As was frequently said yesterday, "We're plowing new ground here." - CM

Taxes? Wants update on Columbia coffers

Charles Marshburn writes
How much payroll/occupational tax has been collected by the City of Columbia,? How much has the city received? What is that money being spent for? - CHARLES MARSHBURN
You've asked a question which can only be answered by smarter persons than we.. Hope you get the answer, unless, as I have a sneaking suspicion, you're planning to implement such a tax in Greater Gadberry where, we understand, there is a floterial, or rotating Mayor, of whom we only know these few: Joyce, Rollen, Ruby, Greg Coomer, Mr. & Mrs. Marshburn, Tim, Jerry, Eddie & Daughters, and Hollywood - many of whom are anti-tax. I tell you, I don't think they'll appreciate a new tax at the roundtable down at the store. - The staff of CM

Donna Jones: Why should county people pay for city election

Comments re article 74717 Judge Stephens makes statement on appeal Donna Jones writes:
Wondering why the county people should have to pay taxes to cover a new city mayor election. I am sure many people will agree. - DONNA JONES
Donna Jones - If the election is held with the General Election, as we're told it will be, it in itself should have only a very small cost, which would be paid by the county. One cost, which would be borne by Adair County Fiscal Court, would be paying for an appeal of Judge Judy Vance's voiding the November 4, 2015 Columbia Mayoral Election. A decision on that will be decided, most believe (Executive Sessions are secret sessions, and are closed to the public), in an executive session of the Adair County Board of Elections today, Wednesday, at 2:30pmCT, in the Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY.
