KY leads nation with monthly unemployment rate decrease

FRANKFORT, KY (Fri 21 Nov 2014) - Kentucky leads the nation in states that had statistically significant over-the-month unemployment rate declines in October 2014, according to a report today from the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Kentucky's seasonally adjusted preliminary unemployment rate dropped to its lowest level in more than six years in October 2014 at 6.2 percent from a revised 6.7 percent in September 2014.

It marks the single-biggest one-month drop in the unemployment rate since 1976, when the current methodology for measuring the rate was adopted. It surpasses last month's record-breaking drop of 0.4 percent and makes the state's 0.9 percent drop in the unemployment rate since August its largest reduction measured in a two-month time period.

BLS also reports that Kentucky is tied for fifth among states this month in over-the-year decrease. The preliminary October 2014 jobless rate was 2 percentage points below the 8.2 percent rate recorded for the state in October 2013.

Sheriff Pike clarifies story on election day problems

Story had right Sheriff, wrong precinct. Cynthia Rowe was sheriff in West Columbia. And, the poll was short of county, not city ballots - but the situation did create long lines, and might have suppressed the both

By Victoria Pike

I was sheriff at S. Columbia 2 precinct, not West, as reported in your story. Also, we ran out of county ballots at 9:19 am until 12:45 pm causing a long line to form and people had to use the e slate machine to vote county until new ballots could be printed up and sent from Frankfort. Please check my report and make these corrections. - Victoria Pike

Thanks - The changes have been made in the story. Also, we're frequently told this morning that the Sharon Burton had a great story, in more detail, in the Adair County Community Voice newspaper. And we've been told that Lisa Fisher is planning an interview with Dr. Arnold. When we have the time it will air on WAIN we'd like to let everybody know. In an conversation with Dr. Arnold this morning, he said that he's still planning to file the petition by Monday, but noted that he has 30 days from the Nov. 4 election in which to file, and that other parties have 20 day after he files the petition to file a counter request. - EW

Vicky Compton: The voting process has to be fair

Supports action planned by Dr. Arnold

By Vicky Compton
Personal commentary

I think it's great. Do ask for a recount. I can't vote either way and have nothing against anyone who ran but the voting process has to be fair. So many men and women have died for our freedoms.

It's a privilege to vote! I think we have a duty to make sure the election process is treated with respect. We must require the highest standards and accountability! Thank you! Vicky Compton --Vicky Compton

Kentucky Afield Outdoors: Promising Waterfowl Season

Even with winds straight from the North Pole, 2015-2016 waterfowl seasons look promising

By: Lee McClellan

FRANKFORT, Ky. - The holiday commercials already swamping our collective brains along with winds straight from the North Pole remind us that short-sleeve weather is now months away. Winter is here.

Waterfowl hunters don't see these developments as bad news. They are getting their bags of decoys out of storage, cleaning and oiling shotguns and practicing their calling. Waterfowl season, for both ducks and geese, opens Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27.

Waterfowl habitat across Kentucky is in good shape and the recent cold snap shouldn't greatly impact the upcoming opener. "It is dried out a little bit, we could use some more rain, but everything still looks good," said Rocky Pritchert, migratory bird program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

History: Columbia on 20 Nov 2014 in 1861

It was a good day - if there can be a good day in war - for Union Soldiers in Columbia, KY, who got four months pay, new uniforms, a Navy pistol, before the soldiers shipped out for Camp Billy Williams, at "Neetsville" on Green River in northeastern Adair County. Located on Dunnville Road.

By Eddie & Tiffany Kessler

Text taken from the book, The Wild Riders of the First Kentucky Cavalry - A History of the Regiment in the Great War of the Rebellion 1861-1865. The book is written/composed in 1894 by Sergeant E. Tarrantt, A Headquarter Clerk:
"The ten companies under command of Col. Frank Wolford, with Bramlette's regiment, were ordered to Columbia, Ky., arriving there about November 20th [1861]. There we found the Fifth Kentucky Cavalry, under Col. D.R. Haggard in course of formation, and also the Ninth Infantry, under Col. Grider.

"While the regiment was at Columbia, the Paymaster came and paid off the men for four months' service. The Navy pistol was issued to them, and the boys were now pretty well armed as Cavalry. They also drew full suits of navy blue, which enhanced the looks of the men at least fifty per cent, as many of them had been used to the plain homespun garb of their mothers' and sisters' manufacture."
It goes on to say the regiment received new orders on December 6th and left for Camp Billy Williams, near "Neetsville", on Green River. - Eddie & Tiffany Kessler
