Bonnie Gale Ashbrook, Adair County, KY (1948-2014)

She was a native of Pulaski County, KY, and a resident of Adair County, KY, at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late Earl & Mary Lois Smith Morrison. She leaves four direct living descendants. She had professed faith in Christ, was a LPN at Jane Todd Crawford Hospital in Greensburg for 32 years, and was employed at Nally & Haydon for two years and Walmart for seven years.

Eva Mae Kimbler, 85, Russell County, KY (1928-2014)

She was a native of Russell County, KY, and a resident of the county at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late Arlin and Clara Brumett Guffey, and the widow of the late James Henry Kimbler. She was the matriarch of a large, respected family. She leaves 11 direct living descendants. She was a member of Fairview Separate Baptist Church and a house wife.

Glendale, KY, firefighter dies in line of duty; another airlifted

Twenty five year old Jonathan E. French struck by tractor trailer while fighting vehicle fire in southbound lane of I-65 near Glendale, KY, and was pronounced dead at the scene by Hardin County Coroner. Another firefighter airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital. Accident is under investigation by KSP accident constructionist Trooper Bryan Washer

KY State Police Post 4, Elizabethtown, KY

GLENDALE, KY - The Kentucky State Police Post 4 in Elizabethtown, KY, responded to a fatality accident this morning on Southbound I-65 at the 87 mile marker.

The Glendale Volunteer Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire at the same location at approximately 2:54amCT involving a van that was fully engulfed on the right shoulder of the Interstate.

(Note: We are awaiting details of a fatality involving a member of the Glendale Fire Department, and the injury of another GFD member, at or near the scene if the collision, which will be posted on receipt, The Glendale Fire Department was responding to a vehicle fire on I-65 when the collision occurred. - CM)

Closure will remain and detour in place for about another hour and a half. Update will be sent when road reopens."

FRANKFORT, KY (Aug. 5, 2014) - Eastern Kentucky will soon be home to one of the most innovative dairy facilities in the world.

Gov. Steve Beshear today announced Kentucky Dairy Product Innovations LLC (KYDPI) will open a dairy processing plant in Laurel County. The facility will develop a low-calorie, lactose-free skim milk, produced exclusively from Kentucky cows.

Deputy Coroner David Taylor releases identify of fire victim

Adair County Deputy Coroner David Taylor called at 8:50amCT, to release the name of the victim of the tragic fire at Milltown, KY early yesterday morning. She is 66 year old Bonnie Ashbrook. The positive identification was made by the Kentucky Medical Examiner, who made the determination using dental records. - Larry Smith

Despite severe funding cuts, Adair Co. Schools finances strong

General fund balance stood at $2,365,492,.55 at the end of the fiscal year. Superintendent Alan W. Reed says important challenges still facing the district are construction of an Auditorium at Adair County High School, a new Band Room, and a new Bus Garage.

  • 2012-13 (Reed) - $1,517,903.00
  • 2011-12 (Treece) - $ 1,540,549.00
  • 2010-11 (Treece) - $ 926,695.00
The general fund is the main spending account and reflects the overall financial health of a school district.

Name of victim of Tuesday morning fire not yet released

Although we are aware that the name of the victim of the tragic fire at Milltown yesterday morning is being told through a number of channels, FM 92.7 the WAVE and FM 99.9 The Big Dawg joins in awaiting official coroner or funeral home release before publicizing it.

James Freeman (Jim) Curry, Taylor Co., KY (1931-2014)

He was a very special, extraordinary man, who, with his gracious wife, who survives, Sara Blevins Curry, set high standards for food and hospitality in their very memorable restaurants, including Columbia Palace in Columbia and the unforgettable Cumberland House in Campbellsville. He was a native of Green County, KY, and a resident of Taylor County, KY and Bellevue, Washington at the time of his death. He professed faith in Christ and was a member of the South Campbellsville Baptist Church. He was a Green Beret who served honorably in the U.S. Army in two wars, the Korean War and the Vietnam War and will be accorded full military honors at his burial in Brookside Cemetery. He professed faith in Christ and was a member of the South Campbellsville Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Noah Marvin Curry and Mandy Bird Young Curry. He leaves 25 direct living descendants, including an unborn grandson.

Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, West Main Street, Campbellsville, KY, with full military honors by the United States Army Honor Guard.

Reader asks about Early Release Fridays in 2014-15

Early Release was a transformative success last year, according to Adair County School Superintendent Alan W. Reed, and will be repeated in 2014-15, starting in September. It's in the school calendar on the the very excellent: Adair County School District website will carry reminders of Early Release each Friday when they occur

Thanks, Jamie Isabelle. According to the 2014-15 school calendar PDF at the district's website, "An early release Friday student schedule will be followed during the months of September 2014 through April 2015. Students will be released from school, and bustransportation will be provided at 1:00 pm every Friday during these months for students not participating in afterschool activities. Students participating will be provided remedial, enrichment, and personal growth activities from 1:00 pm until the end of the school day. Parent pickup will be required for these students. The Early Release Fridays will be used for teachers and administrators to participate in ongoing professional development, instructional planning, and to progress monitor students to enhance learning."

Glass artist Steve Scherer, of Edmonton, KY, will demonstrate how he creates animals and ornaments from 9:30am-2:30pmCT/10:30am-3:30pmET, Saturday, August 9, 2014, at the Kentucky Artisan Center, 975 Walnut Meadow Road, just off Interstate 75 at exit 77, Berea, KY.

Steve Scherer has been working with glass since 1969. He was introduced to his craft by "Cap" and Dave Duewer, while a senior in high school in Decatur, Illinois. At school there was little time for glass lessons, so Steve began to experiment with glass on his own as a hobby. After completing a degree in microbiology at the University of Illinois, Steve decided he would prefer to earn his living working with glass.
