USMC training fantastic opportunity for young men

Jon Halsey writes:
Fantastic opportunity for these young men and congratulations for gamely taking part.

As proud as I am of these young athletes, I still experienced some painful memories of hot, hot summer months of 1960 at Camp Bullis arguing which was worse: lying on your back among sand fleas or among sand burrs.

There was a general proscription against holding maneuvers when "Maggie's drawers" were flying. This, in reference to Red Flags displayed all over the Camp to indicate that the Heat Index had topped 100. We always marveled at how many Platoon Leaders were color blind and couldn't seem to make out the color red.

I wouldn't trade the experience for all the tea in China, but I sure would be proud to lose the memories. - Jon Halsey
