Lake Cumberland reaching full pool this summer

Good news for anglers. The plan to raise the lake to its old level stalled early this year, when researchers discovered the endangered duskytail darter had moved downstream from the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River while the water was down. Raising the lake back up could impact these fish. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers acted rapidly to complete a plan to ensure the survival of the darter.

FRANKFORT, KY (Thursday, March 27, 2014 - Biologists with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources predict the return of Lake Cumberland to its normal summertime level will prove a boon to fishing in the coming years.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced Tuesday that the lake should return to its old level of 723 feet above sea level by mid-May. Lake Cumberland had been held at a lower level since 2007, while repairs to Wolf Creek Dam were underway.

Word from Indiana: Watch for road work, basketball fans!

From Chris Jessie, KTC, District 4, Elizabethtown, KY
Story by Will WIngfield and Harry Maginity, Indiana Highway Department

SOUTHEAST INDIANA - Don't get caught traveling! Basketball fans driving to see the universities of Kentucky, Louisville, and Tennessee play in the Sweet Sixteen in Indianapolis should be aware of road construction.

Construction crews are going into overtime, rebuilding and rehabilitating portions of the Interstate 65 corridor near the Ohio River border at Louisville and between Uniontown (Exit 41) and Seymour (Exit 50). Construction crews are pulling back barrels and barricades this weekend to the greatest extent possible, but basketball fans should plan extra time where speed limits are reduced.

In addition, the U.S. 421 Ohio River bridge between Madison, IN, and Milton, KY, is closed for construction. Alternate routes include the Locks and Dam Bridge near Markland, IN, or interstate bridges in the Cincinnati area.

Up-to-the-minute information on road construction and closures is available at http://indot.carsprogram.org or 800-261-7623. Drivers who commit lane violations or charge and elbow their way into traffic are subject to increased work zone fines. Drivers are encouraged to know the three-second rule: allow three seconds following distance between the vehicle in front of you.
