Life in the Holler: Sometimes circle of life subtle, but not always

2014-02-02 .
One of the best things about living in the holler is you can always see the circle of life in one way or another. Sometimes it is very subtle and other times it plainly smacks you in the face. Today -- my cheek is still red from the blow. - Shamarie Claiborne

Carol Perkins: Folding under pressure

By Carol Perkins

Somewhere between a deep sleep and the fringe of consciousness and against the hum of my sleep machine, the shrill of Fluffy's voice, coming from the den, startled me. That particular bark typically indicates a stranger approaching, but who would be coming at this hour of the morning? I turned to see if Guy heard it too, but he was not there.

Happy Tail: Tasha, tougher than nails

TASHA: '. . . in November she was given six weeks to live. I knew she would survive much longer and she did. One morning in August when I went out to feed the horses Tasha walked to the door and then turned and went to lay down. She died that afternoon. It was just like Tasha. She decided it was time and she did it on her own. And she loved me so much that I didn't have to make the decision when to euthanize her - she did it on her own. This is why I have fallen in love with the Australian Cattle Dog breed. They are tough dogs, intelligent, and very devoted to their owners. They're hard workers and need a job to do. They are not a dog to be living in an apartment. They LOVE the water and they HATE vacuum cleaners. They need a farm and an active life.' - PEG SCHAEFFER, Sugarfoot Farm Rescue

My first Australian Cattle Dog was not of my choosing.

A huge thank you to Ms. Mary Knight and George Kolbenschlag. I can say with pride that our school system is truly blessed. But it has nothing to do with me or my hiring.
