To Julia Ann Pickett Thompson (1945-2014)

Columbia has been saddened by the news of death of Julia Ann Pickett Thompson, 68, Adair Co., KY (1945-2014), on January 22, 2014, in Bowling Green, KY. She was a member of the Adair County High School Class of '63

To Julia Pickett Thompson (1945-2014)
By W. M. Feese, Jr.
I got the sad, sad news today -
Julia Thompson has passed away.
I know she'll be missed by all her friends;
she was special in her very own way

She started school at Columbia Grade Center.
She was in the same class as me
and after 12 long years we graduated
with the class of '63

She went her way and I went mine;
We each went our own direction
Over the years we've kept in touch
with an occasional class reunion

We just had one not long ago.
She helped in it's organization.
She kept us in line and handled the finances,
which revealed her dedication.

To hear of her death was such sad news,
I could only sit and cry.
I only wish i had taken the time
to tell her a proper good bye

Well good bye my friend, I'll tell you now
for i know where you are going.
I have the peace and joy to know
You look great with the new wings you're wearing

On Matt Loy Proposal - How about reduced rate admission?

Rita Smith writes:
If the amount of revenue will not allow it, then maybe we could look at a reduced rate. Tthere are many things we could do for these kids. Maybe each classroom could have some type of a competition and the group that achieves their goal, would be a rewarded to get to go to a game free; plus it would get these other students motivated.

A lot of students don’t have the money to attend the games. And besides, is it always in hopes that the revenue is dependant upon the public and the out of town visitors attending.

There are a lot of parents that are diehard fans and they want to continue to show support for our students. Just saying. - Rita Smith

Right now, an great friend who wants to move back to Columbia- her husband has a job offer here he's considering - is looking for "a nice 3 bdrm, 2 bath house for lease in Adair County," and asks us to let her know if we hear of one, and we'll try.

She regularly checks CM classifieds, as so many others do, so the best bet for someone with property to rent is to post a Rental ad today. We hope it'll be done soon. This is an all-time, all-star family - a metric changing for the better - one. At CM, we got real mad when they moved away, but we subscribe to the once an Adair Countian, always an Adair Countian doctrine.

Whether she rents your house or not, someone is very likely to rent it fast, particularly if it is a CM Classified Photo Ad. Of the last 7 Photo Ads posted, 5 have been rented in less than 2 days time!

Harrods Fork Baptist Church Directory Listing updated

Linda Walker sent a revised listing for Harrod's Fork Baptist Church for CM Directory of Churches listing, and there are other recent changes, including a revised listing for Columbia United Methodist Church. The listing is continuously updated and checked. Yesterday, it got a minor facelift, barely noticeable, but we think it will add to readability. Here's the new Harrods' Fork listing:

HARROD'S FORK BAPTIST CHURCH. 169 Harrods Fork Circle, Columbia, KY, between of Sparksville and Breeding, KY. Pastor Jeff Eastham. Sunday School 9:30amCT. Sunday Worship 10:30amCT.

CM DIRECTORY of CHURCHES serves primarily Adair County, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Counties. It is continuously updated as a service to our readers. We want it to provide basic information to newcomers, old residents looking for a church home, or even for members who may have just forgot what time the Fellowship Meal is scheduled. Text listings are free, but call 270-250-2730 before submitting.

Mike Watson: Fiddling around

There was a time when there were a lot of very old violins in prominent homes. This story tells of many in Adair, Cumberland, and Russell Counties, including some fiddles by an Italian, of Cremona, by the name of Antonius Stradivarius. History Cousin Mike Watson has delved deeply and diligently and has discovered some fascinating fiddle facts.
Click on headline for complete story

By Adair County Historian Mike Watson

Once upon a time there was a search, of sorts, for the oldest fiddle in Kentucky. The short items below follow that search within the range of the Adair County News.

In 1901 and for two year following, the pages of the News carried several short articles on the merits and ownership of noted and aged fiddles, or violins, as the case may be. It appears there were several long-lived ones in the county and environs, as evidenced below... Miss Dixon, mentioned in one of the items, played her violin regularly and on at least one occasion, entertained, along with others of like mind, in the Columbia Courthouse.
