Donald Matney, 52, of Spencer, Iowa, formerly of Adair County, died Monday January 6, 2014 at 5:33pmCT, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Funeral services will be Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 11amCT/12pm noon ET, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Wayne Keith officiating. Burial will be in Lee Cemetery in Green County. Visitation will be after 4pmCT/5pmET Friday, January 10, 2014. Casket Bearers will be Charlie Dial, Chris Dial, Michael Matney, Ralph Curry, James Garrison and Lewis Garrison.

FRANKFORT, KY - The Kentucky State Police used their latest episode of KSP-TV to warn parents about the dangers of Internet predators. The video shares an inside look at the agency's Electronic Crimes Branch and the intricate work that takes place to protect children from online predators.

KSP spokesman Tpr. Paul Blanton says the Internet has become an important part of everyday life - for information, communication and entertainment.

FRANKFORT, KY - Lindsey Wilson College student Emily Ramage of Columbia took part Wednesday in a statewide campaign urging college students to finish college in a minimal amount of time.

Dubbed "15 to Finish," the campaign urges full-time college students to complete a full 15-credit schedule each semester, or 30 credits a year, the standard course load that will allow students to graduate on-time in four years.

FRANKFORT, KY - Kentucky hunters took 20 bears during the 2013 bear season that concluded this past December. This season introduced an expanded bear hunting zone as well as an archery and crossbow season.

Both the firearm and archery/crossbow bear seasons received a 10-bear quota for the 2013 seasons for a total of 20 bears. Hunters can now hunt bears in 16 Kentucky counties, up from four counties in 2012.

Family loses everything in fire; CJE office helping with aid

Dale (Henry) Williams, Windsor, KY (1954-2014)

He was a native of Berea, KY, and a resident of Windsor, KY, at the time of his death. His wife, Tina Ferry Williams, survives. He leaves three direct living descendants. He was a truck driver for Pyles Concrete in Liberty, KY and attended Jennies Chapel United Methodist Church. Dale enjoyed talking to his buddies on the CB radio, where he was known as "Henry". He loved to hunt for arrowheads and was an avid deer hunter.

New GED Classes coming to the Adair Co. Adult Education Center

The Adair County Adult Education Center, 108 Lindsey Wilson Street, is offering classes that will take the stress and worry out of getting a GED. Classes begin Monday, February 3, 2014 and the deadline to register is Monday, January 27, 2014. During these classes, students will receive the skills needed to pass the GED test, including the computer skills necessary to take the test. Classes are free and are offered in morning, afternoon or evening sessions. This morning Gabe Jones (SCB), Jeff Adams, Principal of Lake Cumberland Area Technology Center (KCTCS), Alan Reed, Supt. of Adair Co. Schools, and Barney Taylor, Welding Instructor, reviewed architectural drawings for the satellite campus addition at Adair County High School.

The planning session occurred this morning, January 9, 2014 at 9amCT, at LCATC in Russell Springs. Supt. Reed said the goal is to have both the Welding Program and and the Health Sciences Program to be up and running by the start of the 2014-15 school year in August. Reed admits the goal is ambitious but "doable".

This new App for iPhone and iPad offers "Free, Instant Bird ID Help for 285 North American birds," and pulls real-time data to improve results. It looks like a handy tool for casual bird watchers and counters. The iOS version requires 7.0 or later, and an Android version is slated for release in Sprint of 2014. Country Music Program Slated - Pee Wee King and Others to Aid Local Polio Drive--Pee Wee King, of Louisville, Joe[l] Ray Sprowls and the Lincoln Jamboree and many others will join in on the county music festival to aid the Big March of Dimes benefit scheduled January 28. The program will get underway at 7:30 pm on Tuesday in the Adair County High School gymnasium. Also included on the program are Mike Page and the Kentucky Kouple, of Owensboro, Half Shot Jackson with his impersonation of Elvis Presley, the Sputniks, of Indiana, Charles Durham...Oris Gowen and Edwin Cundiff, both of Columbia, are co-chairmen.

A/3C Robert L. Dillingham was recently assigned to the 754th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron at Port Austin, Michigan.

Pvt. Joseph R. Ballou, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edd L. Ballou, was recently assigned to the 8th Infantry Division in Korea.

New Books at County Library - Library has Mrs. Giles fast-circulating books - "There are a great many books in the Adair County Library that the public should know about," Mrs. V.P. Henry, Librarian, said this week. "While some of these books are not newly published they are equally as good as some on the best seller lists of today. Many of them," she continued, "were given in memory of Paul Hughes, who was a former citizen of Columbia and whose sister, Mrs. Horace Cundiff, lives here now. All of these books listed today are excellent and came from his friends in many parts of Kentucky."

The library also has a number of Mrs. Giles' books but they circulate quite rapidly and are not often on the shelves when called for...

KSP Post 15 reports five fatal collisions in December, 2013

Fatalities occurred in Adair, Casey, Green, Marion, and Russell Counties. Yearly fatalities in 2013 were 27, compared to 34 in 2012. State wide the deadly count went up, from 635 in 2012 to 746 in 2013

COLUMBIA, KY - During the month of December 2013, there were 17 traffic accidents investigated by the State Police working in the Post 15 area in the 11 counties of Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, Marion, Metcalfe, Monroe, Russell, Taylor and Washington.There were five fatal collisions during the month of December in the Post 15 area.
  • Eads, Hubert H., age 72 of Russell Springs KY was killed on 12/03/13 in Russell Co KY
  • Whitfill, Colin D., age 19 of Lebanon KY was killed on 12/06/13 in Marion Co KY
  • Monday, Jesse H., age 83 of Liberty KY was killed on 12/20/13 in Casey Co KY
  • Edwards, Rachel W., age 23 of Columbia KY was killed on 12/21/13 in Adair Co KY
  • Slinker, Alice B., age 67 of Greensburg KY was killed on 12/20/13 in Green Co KY
This brings our yearly fatality count to 27 compared with 34 through this same period in 2012. Statewide fatality count stands at 746 compared with 635 through this same period in 2012.

During the month of December 2013, there were 1174 citations written, 254 courtesy notices written, 1256 vehicles inspected, 582 complaints answered, 66 motorists assisted, 47 criminal cases opened and 153 criminal arrests made. - WM. R. GREGORY

Margaret Campbell, Adair Co., KY (1942-2014)

She was a member of a highly regarded South Adair County family, the daughter of the late James Noel and Piccola blanch Hagan Reliford. Her husband, R.B. Campbell, survives. She leaves five direct and one step living descendants. She was a sewing machine operator at Osh Kosh in Columbia and Fruit of the Loom in Jamestown for several years.
