Epicurean Kentuckian: Maury Lewis inspired to bake Fig Newtons

Click on headline for letter plus photo of Figs, ready for Fig Newton's
Maury Lewis writes:
Ed, I understand you came to the Farmers Market on the Square, to take some pictures of the figs at Danny & Debby Burris' D & D Longview Farm stand and learned that I had bought all of them before you got there.

After I escaped with the bounty to Beautiful Joppa, my husband and I cooked and put them into 7 pint jars. Only 6 jars got processed because one went into the fridge to be eaten shortly.

These are the first Kentucky figs I have bought and processed. I may try my hand at making Fig Newtons - Maury Lewis
Wow! The jam in those jars is beautiful. Just as I was getting over the surprise learning that figs can be grown in Adair County, I see that entrepreneurship may be thriving. Can't wait for the Great American Fig Newton Bakery, the Fig Festival, and the State Assembly designating Beautiful Joppa the Fig Newton Capital of Kentucky.

Farmer's Market on the Square, Saturday, August 31, 2013

The Farmer's Market on the Square, open 8am-12pm noon CT, Saturday, August 30, 2013, at the Adair Annex Parking Lot, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY

By Barbara Armitage

We invite you to make the Farmers Market on the Square "Reunion Central" this morning for Labor Day returnees. Some really great produce today. We've got a great morning lined up. A lot of the traffic around the Square stops and asks us "What kind of fair is this?" The answer likely is that it is an old time Town Market Fair. In any case, in addition to the Farm Fresh Foods, there's entertainment, demonstrations, and, most of all a weekly visit to catch up, in person, with friends. It's the place to be on Saturday morning, just this place was once the place to know the talk of the town when the Columbia US Post Office was on this very corner. And, just as urbanites tell us they go to Whole Foods because the clerks know the foods and can talk to shoppers, knowledgeably, the vendors at Farmers Market on the Square eat their own products and can give tips on their use. (We all try to be good listeners too: We welcome new ideas, so feel free to share yours with us, as well.)

Here's just some of what you can expect at the Farmer's Market on the Square for Saturday, August 31, 2013:
  1. Donna Jones of Jones Honey 270-634-2125 - Kentucky Honey now with Honey Combs. (Donna Jones is president of the Adair County Garden Club and will be happy to talke with you about membership in one of Columbia/Adair County's Most Important Civic Clubs)
  2. Terry Huff of Heavenly Homestead Cheese 270-250-2979 - Hand crafted whole milk natural cheeses. This week's cheeses are Cheddar, Colby, Smoke House, Monterey Jack, and Garlic and Herb, Havarti. Sampling this week Smokehouse Cheddar
  3. Barbara Armitage of Tucker's Station Farms 270-250-2979 - Lots of green beans - Jade and Roma's, onions, English cucumbers, tomatoes, fresh Garlic, jalapeno and HOT HOT HOT Habanero peppers. Check out our PURPLE green peppers. Fresh baked artisan Breads and more.
  4. Darrell Bunnell of Coview Farm 270-384-5412 - A HUGE assortment of Tomatoes, including Ripe Green Tomatoes and more. Hope to have his complete list early this morning.
  5. Caitlin Helm of Lonely Acre Farm 270-634-8207 - Watch for updated list for today.
  6. John England of Outback Farm 270-217-8250 - Natural pasture raised gourmet pork. Large Black Heritage Hogs. Select cuts, vacuum sealed.
  7. Jason Ramos 270-250-3711 - Pasture raised Cornish Cross Chicken.
  8. Jay Cox - Serving Country Ham Sandwiches in time for breakfast and grilling Tenderloins in time for lunch. He'll have chips, cold drinks and more.
  9. Chris Anderson of Sweet Bee 270-634-1544 - Ice Cream is Back! Hand dipped Mayfield Ice Cream and more.
  10. Sandy Evert of S.T.E. Design 270-404-1793 - Handcrafted Jewelry in fall colors now available, knitted and crocheted headbands and more.
  11. Jana Esch of Just Natural Products 270-378-1375 - All natural hand crafted skin care products and soaps. Beeswax candles, room scents and natural household cleaners.
  12. Dale Whittingham of Dales Miniatures 270-378-4859 - Hand crafted miniature barns, houses, historical buildings. Special orders taken to reproduce your home.
