Farmer's Market on the Square, Saturday, August 31, 2013

The Farmer's Market on the Square, open 8am-12pm noon CT, Saturday, August 30, 2013, at the Adair Annex Parking Lot, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY

By Barbara Armitage

We invite you to make the Farmers Market on the Square "Reunion Central" this morning for Labor Day returnees. Some really great produce today. We've got a great morning lined up. A lot of the traffic around the Square stops and asks us "What kind of fair is this?" The answer likely is that it is an old time Town Market Fair. In any case, in addition to the Farm Fresh Foods, there's entertainment, demonstrations, and, most of all a weekly visit to catch up, in person, with friends. It's the place to be on Saturday morning, just this place was once the place to know the talk of the town when the Columbia US Post Office was on this very corner. And, just as urbanites tell us they go to Whole Foods because the clerks know the foods and can talk to shoppers, knowledgeably, the vendors at Farmers Market on the Square eat their own products and can give tips on their use. (We all try to be good listeners too: We welcome new ideas, so feel free to share yours with us, as well.)

Farmers Market on Square: Ripe Green Tomatoes today

2013-08-31 - EK Kitchen, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Darrell Bunnell is always right: Yesterday, Mrs. Marcum and I couldn't wait for more Adair County homegrown tomatoes. Got to the Farmers Market at the Adair Extension Office, to buy the last three of Holly Kerns' tomatoes for the day; which were devoured by 10amCT, and were hungry for more. We found Coview Farms, and bought some of a few of the varieties he grows. Especially intriguing was the Ripe Green Tomatoes. They look like regular tomatoes for frying, but these have the same taste as Red Ripe, just give a different color to a Sandwich or Salad or Tomato Steak entree. It's the centerpiece of this 3:49amCT pre-breakfast snack, above, and is the whole tomato on the right. All the other tomatoes are from Coview Farms as well. Regular reds, yellows, and I think they are calling the square cuts, at 5:35 on the rim of the plate, "black" tomatoes. But I'm not sure. The cukes are from Holly Kerns' garden, I think. They were perfect too; the skin of the cuke hadn't a trace of bitterness. (An aside from the lady who insisted that the perfect presentations of same size tomatoes "aren't homegrown." - Don't pet the family dog on it. Geniece and I have seen the sorting sheds. We seen the field full of all kinds of tomatoes at Coview. I imagine that Coview would pack tray after tray of seemingly size and color cloned tomatoes, of any hue, shape or size imaginable. But we understand how it might seem incredible to anyone who doesn't think Adair County soil can grow almost any thing. Only thing we haven't sorted out, is where the "Co" is in "Coview." The view we saw was into the distance, north, with the main landmark the cemetery in Ebenezer, Green County, KY. Guess "Co" is for Coburg, KY, the city closest to Coview Farm.) Hope to be at the Farmers Market this morning. Coview Farms will be there. It's in the Annex Parking Lot, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY, from 8am-12pmCT. If you go early, be a "Friend of the Farmers Market," pitch in and help set up, and maybe the first in line to enjoy. If you're back in from out for Labor Day, come visit a spell and meet some old friends. It'll back your day go better. It's kind of our Picadilly Circus. I'm always surprised at the people who re there whom I haven't seen in years. - ED WAGGENER
