Chuck Hinman: IJMA. High School Class Ring

Chuck Hinman: High School Class Ring. Chuck supposes his Nebraska 'egg paid for' class ring is probably still lying on Guam, that remote South Pacific island where he was playing volleyball during a break in the action of World War Two.

High School Class Ring

In the fall of 1938, we thirteen Liberty, Nebraska, high school Juniors were told to be prepared to meet with the class ring salesman to select and order our class rings.

We were in the depths of the depression and 'everything else bad' days. About the only dependable cash flow the Hinman family had was Mom's pact with her egg-laying hens.<

The difference an hour can make. A fellow (I named Hopper) was hanging out minding his own business.

Hopper was having a pretty decent day. Got his picture taken and was about to be famous, but unbeknownst to him or the photographer, a spider (I named Viper) had other plans.

Yet, if you look at the situation from the view of the Viper, he ending up having a great day! He was lucky enough to catch enough food to feed himself for a week.

Guess it all depends on whose view you like on something as to whether something is horrible or a blessing.

Backyard Oil: Links to Backyard Oil Stories

Jimmy Reliford was a business success beyond all Adair County measure. He was also a master of wit-matching games from high stakes checkers to cards. He was a man whose enjoyment of life, charisma, and humor endeared to Adair Countians in a way few others have. He broke the 'envy glass ceiling' which, before his time meant even modest wealth was criticized. And maybe, because of him, life for the most successful in our midst, is much better today than it was before he hit it big. Maybe now, dreams of all Adair County kids are boundless.

With it all, there was a theatrical side in what he did. Most of us never saw him happier than when the show, "Backyard Oil," won him additional international fame, and focused the attention of the world on Columbia. Pen has search our archives and found several links to stories on CM. Here is the list we have this afternoon, Sunday, August 11, 2013: We hope these links make it easier to remember this wonderful man in a role he loved so much. The stories include many of the insightful reviews of Jackson Brower, the Pennsyltuckian, who critiqued all, or almost all of the episodes for CM.

Lisa, thanks for writing. We do always note when photos come from a restaurant, and try to provide links to the restaurant's web site whenever possible. So if there's no link, you can assume it's something I've put together just for the photo, like the ramen noodles in the photo you commented on. --Pen

Remembering Jimmy Reliford (d. August 10, 2013)

Almost immediately after the death of Jimmy Reliford, the news spread throughout South Central Kentucky, and indeed, around the world. In Columbia, some remarked that the news was the only thing being talked about in Adair County.

Few lives have had the impact or so fascinated the community as Jimmy Reliford. It is a sad time for the community, whose prayers are being lifted up for those who will miss him most, his family and the close, close friends he made in his boyhood and which remained intact throughout his life. A fellow oilman sent two links, early this Sunday morning. CM has also posted a tribute from Larry Smith. The links is below. We'll post additional links and notes in the Today with CM feature as more information is received.

Happy Tails: A welcome Annual Visitor, Michelle Ruiz

A happy, highly awaited time of the year is when Michelle Garcia Ruiz, whose aunt teaches at Lindsey Wilson, comes to Sugarfoot for visits. This year was no exception. Peg Schaeffer delights in observing a constant in the bright maturing young woman: Michelle's love of animals. On a sad note, she lost a wonderful neighbor yesterday and writes: Condolences to the family of Jimmy Reliford. Jimmy has land across the street from us and has always been a good neighbor. I've never heard a bad word about him. RIP Jimmy.. Click on headline for story with photo(s).

Melissa Stone: The Gifts of Gradyville

There comes a realization that the best "things" to give a child are not things at all.

By Melissa Stone
First Posted on CM five years ago, July 8, 2008

I think we, as adults, are often preoccupied with giving to the children in our lives bigger and better "things". We all do it. We all seem to want our children to have all the conveniences that we claim to never have had.

My trip to Gradyville, Kentucky, was an afterthought

A recent trip to Gradyville, Kentucky reminded me of something that we all know--we just sometimes tuck it way back in our mind where it's not as easily accessed, as it should be. That "something" is the realization that the best "things" to give a child are not things at all.

"Beyond the Light of Day"

Richard A. (Red) Watson knows cave country in a way that most of us natives can only dream of. He and his wife, Dr. Patty Jo Watson, have made parallel careers for themselves in our neck of the woods. In fact they have made our hills, valleys, and what's beneath much clearer for those of us willing to listen.
