Messiah performances through history often benefitted charities

Messiah Moment Tuesday, November 27, 2012:

From Gerald Chaffin
News from Lindsey Wilson Choral Ensembles

Throughout the history of Messiah performances there are unparalleled and uniquely traceable connections to local news media. (Which, of course, makes one wonder how Handel might approach the task if he were living today! Certainly, he would have contacted Twitter and Columbia Magazine!) These moments in the media give us insights into the local culture of the time. The first performance in Dublin, Ireland, and many subsequent ones as well, were given for charity, to benefit specific cause(s). The News Journal, on April 7, 1742 announced that the first performance would provide funding for:
"Relief of the Prisoners in the several Gaols (i.e. Debtor's Prison), and for the Support of Mercer's Hospital in Stephen's Street, and of the Charitable Infirmary on the Inns Quay."
Lindsey Wilson College Choral Ensembles with the Commonwealth Musicians and You! present selections from Handel's beloved masterwork on Monday, December 3, at 7pmCT at Columbia Baptist Church, 201 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY. This presentation is patterned after Messiah sing-alongs in which the audience joins in singing the choral sections. For additional information, contact ChafinG@lindsey.edu.

(In response to Mr. Marshburn's question regarding editions:: The specific sections chosen for our performance conveniently work well in all standard/traditional editions, including the Van Camp edition. The edition we are providing for the audience at the door on Monday evening is the popular G. Schirmer edition. And, to make the process simple for those participating, the concert program references each selection's page number!) Mr. Marshburn's question regarding editions:
