Remembering WKU basketball greats: McDaniels, Glover

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
When speaking of WKU greats which were products of local schools I can never forget Clarence Glover, Caverna High School and Jim McDaniels, Allen County Scottsville High School who were key componants of the 1971 Final Four WKU team.

As to the occasional discussions in the Chowning household, I can safely surmise that those of the political nature were probably more frequent then John is leading us to believe. --

May have seen Little Bit near Tractor Supply, on Saturday

Laura Harris writes:
I may have seen this dog by Tractor Supply on Saturday. Dog was standing by the fence close to the intersection and appeared to be looking or waiting for someone. I noticed the dog because it looked somewhat out of place. I hope you find your dog. - Laura Harris

Basketball memories: That talented, athletic Burkesville team

An article by Glasgow's Ronnie Ellis and a comment in it about the State Champion Glasgow Scotties Mr. Ellis remembered evoked memories also of then GHS Coach Jim Richards, his mentor John Burr, and Richards' hero; Ed Diddle. It brought to mind, as well, the saga of the parallel greatness of a Burkesville High School team - of state championship athleticism and talent - from the same era, and unexpected outcome in the Bowling Green Regional when those Panthers met Martha Norris Memorial High School. It's all from memory, without notes or research, so comments and further enlightenment will be appreciated.
The article by Ronnie Ellis referred to defines the Sixties in a whole new way. Read it: Ronnie Ellis reflections on the day JFK was shot

By John Chowning

I remember well when Glasgow won the state championship in basketball under Adair County's Jim Richards, who later coached at WKU. We cheered for Glasgow in Cumberland County. I think that was the first team from our region to win a state championship. We knew of his Adair County roots.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Helpless Watch, a sonnet

Helpless watch
- a sonnet about resolution
Could this much time have come and almost gone
before not meeting face to face again?
Routines have filled the days from breaking dawn
and covered broken dreams of where and when.

Could thousand thoughts have stirred and struggled out
before a resolution to no more?
To know quite often is to know more doubt
and wish conditions as they were before.

Could one desire inflame the fading soul
before the dust to dust finale plays?
Emotions are a mutable patrol
and helpless watch while passion is ablaze.

Each life event must seek its restless place
within the tapestry of living space.

- Robert Stone, 25 November 2012

Old Coddger deems weather is on the way

Old Coddger opines:
Good shot Freddy. We need to remember the old sailors verse. "Red in the morning, sailors take warning." "Red at night, sailors delight." Guess we got weather on the way if that holds true. OC - OC

Carol Perkins: Putting up Christmas Trees Thanksgiving weekend

Time and changes in energy levels have made Christmas a simpler time, a tree with just lights and not ornaments does just fine these days, writer says. But in earlier days, the ritual changeover for the season was much different, Metcalfe County writer says
The next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Thanksgiving in Texas

By Carol Perkins

Thanksgiving weekend is when many people put up their Christmas tree. Out with the pumpkins, Pilgrims, and leftover turkey. In with tinsel, twinkling lights, and candles that run on batteries. Decorating for Christmas is a passion for many, yet a chore for so many more. I am in between. If someone would come to my house, take all my decorations (some have not seen the light of day for years) and transform my house, I would be on the rooftop with joy. Not that I don't like decorating, but I think I've lost my touch.

By Chuck Hinman

Living With Macular Degeneration (MD)

I have macular degeneration which is a fancy name for a disease of the eyes that only old people get. I was in my eighties, living here at Tallgrass Estates in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, when I had my first brush with MD. Little did I realize how devastatingly this painless disease was going to upset my golden years. I would never have dreamed a day was soon coming when I couldn't read the paper or enjoy watching TV because my vision was impaired.
