2012 Memorial Day Service - Columbia, Adair Co., KY

2012-05-27 - 413 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Melissa Stone.
Memorial Day Services at the Columbia VFW Post 6097 were special this year, with only brief - but essential high points of the program held outside by the monument at the entrance to the fairground. Earlier, the crowd had convened in the air conditioned comfort of the VFW Post Hall next door for the introductions, prayers, and the main address by VFW Vice Commander Fred Troutman. The split venue was an innovation by Post Commander Joe Hare, who made the change in anticipation of the sweltering mid-90s late spring heat. Otherwise, it was a perfect day. Carol Perkins: A Family Gathering with Oscar Sullivan

REUNION at LEFTWICH HALL: It was a wonderful family gathering Saturday at Leftwich Hall at Bowling Park in Edmonton, KY for the Sullivan cousins - more properly the Sullivan/Acree reunion - with many special guests, including headliner Oscar Sullivan, of Lonzo and Oscar fame, who at 92 is completing a long awaited autobiography and provided wonderful stories for the reunion

By Carol Sullivan Perkins

Many of my dad's siblings left Metcalfe County as they grew up, one by one. They went north to Indianapolis and south to Nashville and on to Alabama, taking away my chance of really knowing some of my first cousins. We grew up having summer visits but seldom all together at the same time. Of my nineteen Sullivan first cousins, only two of them live in Metcalfe County.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Imperfect me, a sonnet

Imperfect me
- a sonnet of looking inward
I need to think more clearly of results
of using words without intention filled
for careless phrase resounding high exults
but hollowly astute pretended skilled.

I need to feel more deeply joy and pain
of sudden sight and dogging ignorance
for lessons set aside the same maintain
but briefly, shadowed by still more intense.

I need to love more wisely here and now
those timely chances to express concern
and kindnesses undone not disavow
but set as guides for worthy goals to learn.

To do impossible I exercise
imperfect me but have to improvise.

- Robert Stone, 27 May 2012

Letter: Columbia Church of the Nazarene among the best

about: Old Church Bell guards another piece of Nazarene history

Kelly Crawhorn writes:
Speaking of the Columbia Church of the Nazarene, it is one of the best churches I know. You would be hard pressed to find a church anywhere in the county with people as friendly or caring. I often say, it has the atmosphere of a little country church set in the middle of town. When I began searching for a church for my family, I visited several before I wound up there. I didn't make it out the doors that first Sunday morning before several people stopped me to tell me how glad they were to see me. Most of them had no clue who I was. That was 6 years ago, and I've been proud to call it my church home since.

This church is a place with good, sound teaching, great activities going on for kids and youth, a supportive family, people who love you, community outreach programs, and much, much more. I love it there!

Remembering Keith Aaron: The mail got through

About: Keith A. Aaron, Russell County, KY (1921-2012)

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Thank you for posting Keith Aaron's obituary. His wife, Miss Ada, was my second grade teacher, and Keith carried the mail on a rural route for many years. Back before the USPS got so particular about addresses, I'd mail letters or cards addressed simply to "Uncle Arvil, Keith Aaron's route, Russell Springs, Ky.," and they were always delivered.

Thanks again.A Former Russell Countian

Hideaways and fatal falls

I have long been fond of the Brother Cadfael series of mysteries by Ellis Peters, pseudonym for Edith Pargeter. Both in book form and as a British television series shown on public television, they continue to intrigue me. Every now and again for an evening's pleasure I reread one of these stories set in the twelfth century.

Reward Offered for return of Blue Merle Australian Shepherd Dog

Kathy Downey writes:
We have a blue merle Australian Shepherd dog missing from the North 61 area around the Veteran's Memorial Bypass, Jim Blair Recreation Area and J. Downey & Son Lumber, Inc. He was last seen on Friday, May 25, 2012, when he followed our truck up the road a very short distance. He usually always returns back to the sawmill, but this time he did not return.

If someone should have picked him up thinking he is a cattle dog, he is definitely not.

He has become our family pet since he runs cattle, horses and hates cats.A reward is offered for his return. Please contact, Bobby Downey at 270- 378-1221 if you know where we might locate our dog. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - Kathy Downey

Golf Cart Sold - Ad No. 9765 retired

Bob Barnes writes:
Ed, as the same way the majority of your classified items are done, my listing, (Ad No. 9765, is the same. I would like to ask you to remove my golf cart that was for sale to be taken off before the expiration date of the classified ad. I read on the Columbia Magazine where items are sold almost immediately after their listing. My listing had the same result. Thank you so much for this service. It is greatly appreciated! --Bob Barnes
Thanks, Bob Barnes, for the kind note. As proud as we are of the service of Ad No. 9765, there is a note of melancholy: It was next to the last Golf ad still standing, though it's a very important Golf Event. Hope we'll see more Golf items posted, soon. The Event is June 2, 2012. It's a lonely ad in Golf. Please visit it now and think about sending it company. -EW

The next earlier Chuck Hinman column: Chuck Hinman: IJMA 181 - The Old Gray Mare (She Ain't What She Used To Be)

By Chuck Hinman

Recently I was having an evening meal at a local eatery with family who were here for Memorial Day.

While waiting for our food, a baby with his family at an adjoining table became extremely unhappy. His mother, trying everything to get him to stop crying, stood up with him over her shoulder. That wasn't the solution. He was having a ring tailed fit.

100 years ago: ripped from the front page of the News

Columbia was growing, with the report of two new cottages. The banks were stable. Education was pushing to the fore with the addition of several new teachers. But to neutralize the euphoria, the City budget had already sky skyrocketed to $700 a year, and a belled buzzard was the noise nuisance of its day.- CM.

By Jim

The front page of the May 29, 1912 News carried a rather eclectic array of items, a few of which might charitably be called news.

Banks had very creditable statements

The "very creditable statements" of three of Adair County's financial institutions took a fair amount of space. The Bank of Columbia reported resources/liabilities of $240,998.83, while the Farmer's Bank at Casey Creek boasted $40,052.14 and the Bank of Gradyville, $34,461.21.
