Scenic Kentucky: Woodpeckers at Work

2012-04-29 - Knifley, KY - Photo by Lawrence Hamilton. Lawrence writes, "When I spotted this tree all I could think of was the rhyme 'How many pecks did a woodpecker have to peck to make all these peck holes?' I took this picture this morning in Knifley."

Kentucky Color - Snowball Bush

Nature observer pronounces the end of winter 2011-2012, based on a Supreme tenet of Sparksville Meteorological Science: When the last Snowball Bush flower 'melts' away - there will be no more cold weather. And with that event's arrival, he sends two gorgeous examples from the just ended season

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

Just could not resist sharing the accompanying photos with you that I took at 992 Sparksville Road recently. I don't think there is a more pure white flower in nature than that of the Snowball Bush. The perfect form and the perfect white lend themselves to the perfect sight.

Additionally, now that all the Snowballs have melted away, I suppose it is okay to plant garden, drill corn, and set tobacco since the winter of 2011-2012 is history. - Billy Joe Fudge

Tom Chaney. R760 review: Plain Truth

Of Writers and Their Books No. R760: First appeared 29 April 2007 in the Hart County Herald five years ago, with an introductory comment on the book, The Collected Stories of Caroline Gordon, a writer from Todd County, KY. (Wikipedia entry: Caroline Ferguson Gordon (October 6, 1895 - April 11, 1981)
The next earlier Tom Chaney column :Tom Chaney. R759 review: Earth Day column redux

By Tom Chaney

"Plain Truth" Neither Plain nor Simple

Henry James once wrote "the air of reality . . . seems to me the supreme virtue of a novel -- the merit on which its other merits . . . depend." Robert Penn Warren cites this judgment of James in his introduction to to The Collected Stories of Caroline Gordon.

Chuck Hinman, IJMA No. 097: Outdoor toilets

It's Just Me Again No. 097: His early home in Wymore, NE, had a beautiful indoor bathroom with one problem: the disposal system was too slow for a family of five, necessitating a familiar outbulding for the 'Hinman men.' And, of course, this coarse subject brings to mind another male practice of the era, putting outhouses on top of other buildings, as some unknown miscreants did, leaving behind a standing mystery about who put one of the structures on top of the Liberty School Building that Halloween night.
The next earlier Chuck Hinman column: Chuck Hinman, IJMA No. 325: Chan Bush: Chat Room Friend

By Chuck Hinman

Just to say the words "outdoor toilet" or "the privy" brings a wry smile to the faces of oldsters. All of us with rural backgrounds can cone up with a humorous story or two about that subject. What is yours?

Carol Perkins: SCRAPPERS

Keeping Memories, Keeping Scrapbooks: Carol Perkins has found the hobby an engrossing one, and a three-day workshop on the subject at Barren River State Park one of the most enjoyable times of her life
The next earlier Carol Perkins Column: Carol Perkins: Thinking of Life as pieces of pie. Part II of 2

By Carol Perkins

This topic will not appeal to men. Frankly, most men find this hobby of which I am about to write, a waste of money and of time. They just don't understand the significance or the impact these projects in which their wives, daughters, mothers, or girlfriends engage will have on the future, so it is time they are enlightened.
