Epicurean Kentuckian: Guest writer likes 206 Grocery Grill

By Nikki Stargel

I would just like to let everyone know about the opening of 206 Grocery & Grill on HWY 206/Burton Ridge (Liberty Road at Neat Hollow Road) near the Millerfield area. There is a home-cooked meal special every week day and catfish dinners every Friday. The store is open Mon-Sat 5:30am-8pmCT. The food is very good and there is a very friendly atmosphere. The owner, Ricky Burton, also sells antiques. I would recommend giving it a try! - Nikki Stargel

Thanks, Nikki Stargel. Just one addition, Ricky is a great host, witty storyteller - he's a good cook - and he doesn't stint on portions. We wish him the best. - EW

Ken Neat has perfect description of where Little Cake is

Comments re photo 44938 Scenic Adair Co KY Little Cake Christian Church

Ken Neat writes:
Thanks Ed, for a great picture of Little Cake Christian Church.Over the Years I have been asked many times were I am from (because they think I talk funny).

I tell them Little Cake; their next question "where's that?" I tell them a small community in a valley along Bryant's Creek and Green River between Neatsville and Purdy.

You can always tell by the look that comes over their face, they are not well traveled people!!! - Ken Neat
Thanks Ken Neat. Will try to memorize "A small Community in a valley along Bryant's Creek and Green River between Neatsville and Purdy," for the location of Little Cake. That pretty well does it. -EW

Great Ideas: Time for Downtown Skyway?

Peter Cheng, the indefatigable visionary of Columbia business, foresees an opportunity for a Columbia first. With the coming sale of two historic buildings on the Square in Downtown Columbia, KY, his idea is that the new owner(s) of the Russell Building and the Jeffries Building might build a skyway across Jamestown Street to connect the upper floors of the two buildings.

If that were done, perhaps the future bridge from Lindsey Wilson College to Downtown might have a landing which could connect for a gentle descent from Lindsey Hill to the Square, something like what Louisville, KY, has done for the Galt House, Kentucky Center for the Arts, and available parking.

Mike Watson history: Christine, Ella and Eunice

By Mike Watson
Adair County Historian

There was a time when every small community in America had a postoffice within an easy walk. There was no mail delivery, so a localoffice was considered a necessity. The names submitted, generally bythe potential first post master, had to be approved by the officialsin Washington, DC. Often, names submitted by men were in honor ofwife, daughter, sister, or sweetheart. Examination of lists of postoffices reveals a large percentage named for the ladies. AdairCounty was no exception.

Happy reunion: Lovable lab back with owner

About: Lovable, beautiful black dog - limping - found, East 80

Dwight C. Hadley writes:
The owner of the black lab dog was located and glad for the return of his dog. Thank you, Ed Waggener, from - D.C. Hadley
Thanks to you, Mr. Hadley: for being such a good Samaritan and for recognizing the greatness in the lab. It was obvious from the description that you knew someone really loved this beautiful animal, and thanks to Tiffany for the photo. And before we forget it, Bud Polston notified us of a connection to a person in the Sano area, and in the crush of postings that day, we weren't able - as is most normally the case - to pass it on. Thanks again, Mr. Hadley, for caring. -EW

Paul Patton: Origins of Names of Christine Eunice and Ella

Paul Patton writes:
The information shared by Mrs. Jessie Gaskins about the naming of the Ella Post Office coincides with what I heard from my father, Rev. W. H. Patton who preached at the Purdy and New Hope churches for many years and was well versed in the history of this portion of Adair County. The story as I recall was that a certain gentleman had three daughters named Eunice, Christine and Ella and it was for them that these three communities and post offices were named. --Paul Patton
