Green Co., KY, High School Betas partner with LWC in shoe drive GCHS Betas, LWC Bonner Leaders, team up in weeklong drive to raise shoes for area residents, to be distributed through Green County Youth Service Center and Green County Family Resource Center Click on headline for story w/photo(s) By Duane Bonifer GREENSBURG, KY - Members of the Green County High School Beta club and the Lindsey Wilson College Bonner Scholars joined forces for a week to help underprivileged residents in Green County. The two groups collaborated on a weeklong drive to raise shoes for area residents. The two groups combined to raise 61 pairs of shoes, which were given to the Green County Youth Service Center and Green County Family Resource Center. The project was the brainchild of LWC Bonner Scholar Stephanie Barrett of Louisville, KY. Barrett, who has participated in the Toms' Day Without Shoes project, said she wanted to work on a project that did more than simply raise awareness about a problem - she also wanted to help a address a problem. So Barrett and several of her Bonner Scholar colleagues at LWC reached out to area high schools to help collect shoes that could be given to underprivileged residents. "Raising awareness about a problem is important, but we wanted to also do something that would make a real difference in people's live," Barrett said. "Collecting shoes for people in this area who are less-fortunate seemed like a good way to make that connection between awareness and activism." The LWC Bonner Scholars Program is affiliated with the Bonner Foundation of Princeton, N.J. The LWC program includes more than 60 undergraduate students who are committed to positive social change through leading service-learning initiatives in the region. - Duane Bonifer This story was posted on 2012-04-28 05:19:58
