Mr. Acker was inspired by the arts and culture of West Africa after living there as a Peace Corps volunteer, and later studying with master drummer Abraham Adzenyah of Ghana. Gregory Acker has devoted himself to making African-style instruments and teaching music and related West African arts. Students in Mrs. Lisa Godsey's, Mrs. Denessa McCann, Mrs. Amy Walker's and Mrs. Missy Garmon's homeroom spent time each day learning African rhythms, techniques for playing djembe drums, folktales, songs, and basic storytelling dance moves.
