News from Adair County Elementary School

Early Monday morning of March 26, 2012, Adair County Elementary students helped Gregory Acker, the visiting artist, unpack a week of fun and learning. Mr. Acker was inspired by the arts and culture of West Africa after living there as a Peace Corps volunteer, and later studying with master drummer Abraham Adzenyah of Ghana. Gregory Acker has devoted himself to making African-style instruments and teaching music and related West African arts.

Students in Mrs. Lisa Godsey's, Mrs. Denessa McCann, Mrs. Amy Walker's and Mrs. Missy Garmon's homeroom spent time each day learning African rhythms, techniques for playing djembe drums, folktales, songs, and basic storytelling dance moves.

"Unity is Strength" was the theme of the week. Students learned that we all have to work together to succeed. Because of the student's willingness to incorporate unity the week was a huge success.

Three of the group did some song writing.

"Africa" by Mrs. Denessa McCann's class
Elephants and antelopes
Lions, snakes, and bush babies
Music rhythm, painted faces
Dancing mask, African spaces
"African Activities" by Mrs. Missy Garmon's class
Dancing, singing
Playing drums
Celebration
Africa!
"Celebration!" by Mrs. Amy Walker's class
Celebration!
We need music for our dancing
In the forest, on the beach
In the old days, we had slavery
Now it's over, now we're free
The big final of the week was a performance of what the students had learned. Friday afternoon our participating students entertained and educated the kindergarten through third grade by demonstrating their new found knowledge.

Special thanks (akpelo!) to all the participating students, host teacher/grant writer Mrs. Paula Bault, classroom teachers Mrs. Lisa Godsey, Mrs. Denessa McCann, Mrs. Amy Walker, and Mrs. Missy Garmon; instructional assistants Mrs. Marilyn Hunter, Mrs. Patty Antle, Mrs. Shirley Holt, Mrs. Wanda Murry, Mrs. Kay Powell, and Mrs. Mabel Ruth; Mr. Robbie Harmon, Principal, and Mrs. Sandy Wilson, Assistant Principal.

This residency was funded by Adair County Elementary School with an Arts Inclusion Award from VSA arts Kentucky, supporting arts programs for everyone.
