David Wells took color slides of 1974 tornado

Pictures were taken from front yard in College Park in Columbia, KY.

David Wells remembers the tornadoes of 1974. He still has color slides of the event he photographed from his front yard, which include frames of the tornado as it crossed KY 55 going east.

"There were two funnels as it neared 55 and they merged into one funnel," he remembers. And he says he would loan these slides to a responsible person if they wanted to view them or use them, but are keepsakes and he would want them back.

Attorney General Conway announces sentencing of two Hardin County women in elder exploitation scheme

By Shelley Catharine Johnson
Newsfrom the Office of the Kentucky Attorney General

Attorney General Jack Conway and his Office of Special Prosecutions today announced the sentencing of two Hardin County women in connection with the financial exploitation of an elderly Clinton County resident. Full restitution of $118,000 was also collected from 74-year-old Hazel F. Martin and 63-year-old Iris Hodge, both of Radcliff, KY, as per their guilty pleas.

"Financial exploitation of the elderly can be just as devastating as physical abuse," General Conway said. "I am pleased we were able to collect full restitution for the victim's family. This case should serve as a reminder that the abuse and exploitation of elderly or vulnerable citizens is not tolerated in Kentucky."

Wants to know if new sweeper truck will mean new job

And, if so, Rita Smith wants to know how will driver be picked?
Comments re photo 44551 City has newly purchased street sweepervacuum

Rita Smith writes:
So my question is now that an additional job has been created, will an opening be posted for any individual who wants to seek employment with the city? I as a citizen of Columbia think that it is only right and fair that all citizens have a shot at this job. I would hate to think that as usual the only person that gets this job is one who is already working for the city, and they just got moved around to accommodate another individual, if you know what I mean. Sincerely - RITA SMITH
Thanks, Rita Smith: Nothing has been said about any new job, and we would assume there might be even fewer employees needed with this labor saving device. Not sure what you might be referring to by moving people around, but would think that in many cases, that would be the most economical plan. You might want to just check it all out at City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, and the phone number is 270-384-2501. You might want to contact them for specifics about work there. -CM

More on friendly little puppy in the Roadside Park

Pleads not to turn the little dog in; believes it belongs with someone on Morrison Road

Tracy York writes:
This dog was at the Park Saturday when I was there. I think it belongs to someone that lives on Morrison Road. Please don't take it to the shelter, because if it doesn't belong to someone, and it isn't adopted in like 2 to 3 weeks, they will put it to sleep. That isn't fair to this poor animal. - Tracy York

Almost Famous: When CBS Dropped by Shelbyville

A crew from CBS Sports dropped by the coffee shop in Shelbyville last week to shoot footage for a segment on the UK/UL rivalry. The piece was supposed to air on the pregame show before Saturday's semifinal game between the schools, but got bumped, and then bumped again from the post-game wrap-up. The producers did finally find a home for the segment, on video sharing site vimeo:

Rivalry Kent vs Lou Final Four Feature from Deb Boulac on Vimeo.

A note: Mayor Thomas Hardesty of Shelbyville gives an Academy Award performance in the video, as does my granddaughter, the little baby in her mother's UK-loving arms. (And, while Mayor Hardesty may be deluged with offers from Hollywood, he might learn a trick or two from Columbia's singing, guitar playing, silk tongued orator Mayor, the honorable Mark D. Harris.) - Ed Waggener

JIM: Tware SOAP Mrs. Coffey was making 60 gallons of

Another Case Closed: Supreme Chronoscryer issues ruling in Soup v. Soap

Jim writes:
After re-donning my super-dooper secret chronoscryers robe and (re)casting both my weary, bloodshot baby blues upon a perfect replica of the orginal ar-tickle, I see that it very plainly says that Mrs. Coffey was making.........................soap. That rather makes sense, as it seems doubtful soup could be called "a necessary article in all well-regulated families."

On t'other hand, Mrs. Coffey certainly didn't make lye soap (the kind now known as old-fashioned lye soap), as that was an all-day (and sometimes longer) job. --Jim
