Bird Fay remembers more grayish, rounded, than Pileated

Looking forward to Great Backyard Bird Count, February 17-20, 2012

By Fay W McKinley
The bird I remember was not as black as the Pileated - more grayish and I don't remember the white. Also, its body was rounder. It was shaped more like a very small chicken so I guess that is why people called it woodhen and also why I didnt recognize it in the bird books. Maybe my memory isn't as good as it used to be. Sometimes the older we get the less we remember things correctly. Thanks for a quick answer. And thank you, Wendy, for the info, I am looking forward to the Big Bird Count. --Fay W McKinley

Vonnie Kolbenschlag sends additional information on Capt. Robert Paxton

By Vonnie Kolbenschlag
Here's a few additions to the story.

Too bad CM wasn't around in 1815, because the War of 1812 officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent on December 24, 1814. I'd say they got a late start. Measles and mumps caused a lot of deaths in the War of 1812 and also in the Civil War.

Jane Casey was known as Jennie, maybe because her mom was a Janealso. She married Paxton in 1803 and by the time he went to war ( that was officially over ) they had 6 children. This is mentioned in Col. Wm. Casey's will (1816) as he is more generous to Jennie, a widow, than to her sisters. In 1824 she married Solomon Baker from Gradyville. He was a skillful gunsmith.

One of the daughters of Jennie and Robert Paxton married Dan Trabue, Jr. -Vonnie Kolbenschlag

JIM: Mill Wheels Grindin' - 2 Mike Watsons needed to keep track

Yet another timely enlightenment from JIM. Only yesterday, while having coffee at the Circle R, I learned from renowned Adair County (okay, Russell County claims him, but he was born and lives in Adair County) artist Leo Bryant of his childhood memories of a mill upstream from Young's Mill on Russell Creek, which I had never known existed. Only remnants are left, but Mr. Bryant said he could probably paint it from memory - and, as everyone who has seen his "Star Theater" (Link includes The Columbia Hotel with Campbellsville Stagecoach and other Leo Bryants) print knows, such a work would be a masterpiece. - ED WAGGENER

By Jim

Sue Ingram Sherman's letter: (Jim's Tidbits reminds her of family ties to Columbia mill business set me to thinking (a dangerous proposition at best). For the quarter-century or thereabouts from the closing years of the 19th century through about the end of World War I, it would take two Mike Watsons to write the history of all the mills -- planing, roller, grist, and otherwise - that operated in Adair County; and those two Mikes would need a battalion of scorekeepers to keep track of who was working with whom and who was partners with whom on any given day.

Fay's peckerwood is a Pileated woodpecker

Turns out, we learn below, Adair County actually has a plethora of peckerwoods - seven in all. And lots of names for the Pileated. Please read on. -CM

By Wendy Butler Burt

The woodpecker sending large woodchips flying in all directions while searching for insects or excavating a nesting hole in a tree, known locally as a "Woodhen" (or, as I once was told, a "Pollyanna Woodhen"), is a Pileated Woodpecker.
