JIM: The Monroe County Recovery Squad

By Jim

With Ken Burns' excellent miniseries "Prohibition" starting on PBS tomorrow evening, Sunday, October 2nd, 2011, perhaps the time has arrived to lay before the CM readership the following "news" from 1921 from nearby Monroe County.

Mayhap by coincidence, mayhap by design, this piece appeared in a column next to a lengthy rail about rampant moonshining and the breaking of prohibition laws in Kentucky. Gov. Morrow, backed up by the Amen Corner of Judge B.J. Bethurum of Somerset, John H. Gilliam of Scottsville, president of the Commonwealth Attorneys' Association, et al., "described the liquor violations as one of the most serious problems before officials today. He said that 'religious meetings are being broken up, schools disturbed and private meetings interrupted by users of whisky.'" (On the other hand, Judge C.C. Marshall, of Shelbyville, sniffed that his district was relatively free of crime.)

From the January 12, 1921 Adair County News:A dispatch from Tompkinsville says that the moonshiners of Monroe County have put upon foot an ingenious system. The band is divided into marketing and recovering branches. When a purchaser goes to the purchasing point, gets his whisky and starts on his way rejoicing, he is met by the recovering squad, who tells him they are government agents and that they were ordered to confiscate all the liquors. The man loses his liquor, and the recovering squad carries it back to the purchasing stand and it is sold again.

Charles Marshburn submits visionary proposal

Comments re article 47151 Fairplay KY resident wants to know extent of nearby sinkhole

Charles Marshburn writes:
As a fine, upstanding member of this community, I think you should undertake the task of setting up a field trip to the sinkhole perhaps with the aid of Mr. Fudge. I would go along for the education. The ball is in your court. --Charles Marshburn
What an idea! Thanks for a capital idea for bringing Culture & Enlightenment to Adair County, PLUS busloads of Canadian Tourists. You have made, we're sure, a friend for life in Sue Stivers. And, as an aside, may I put you down as a prospective pallbearer. (No time soon as I know, but no one else has accepted.) -EW
