The Missing ACHS Totem Pole is safe with Ricky Bault

2011-08-20 - Adair Co. Middle School, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
Ricky Bault outbid the only other collector, Donald "Crash" Thrasher at a 2002 sale of surplus Adair County High School property when auctioneer Murrell Burton lowered the hammer on his $55 bid. Mitzi Bault still has the bidder number and the receipt secretary Carol Roy gave Ricky after he paid for the item. In its hidden stairwell location, the Totem Pole is difficult to photograph, but that's it at right. It measures some nine feet tall. The totem pole was in the original Adair County High School building at 322 Indian Drive, now the home of the Adair County Middle School.

Would Cross Road Cemetery be today's Redmon Cemetery?

Cemetery is cited as the burial place of John S. McQueary (1900-1918) killed fighting for the the United States at Flanders Field in World War i

Virginia Kimbler Burkett writes:
Could this be the cemetery behind New Hope Baptist Church on Highway 206?Ella was mentioned and this was the old country store post office. Also, there is a cemetery on what is now known as Allen School House RD. There are several old graves there and it is up the road from Christine. It was known as the Redmon Cemetery years ago. Many of my family are buried there on land once owned by my aunt and uncle. --Virginia Kimbler Burkett

Agent Jackson reports in on totem pole

"But she's solved the mystery. The totem pole is at Ricky and Mitzi Bault's House. And her brother in law, James Brockman, has just sent in the story of the Totem Pole's creation in an art class in 1969. It has a 33 year run in the public eye, and it remains in excellent shape with its current curators.

Patricia Jackson writes:
Oops...sorry Ed! Didn''t mean to let anything slip...but now we have to change our secret passwordphrase; how about something like: 'don't blame us..it's not our 'bault'? Heehee...I now turn this mission over to the head agent, which would be you; and I will await further instructions. Nice job Commander!! --Patricia Jackson

The ACHS Totem Pole was a 1969 Art Class project

This account is from one of the original artists who carved the Missing ACHS Totem Pole The project meant more than just a sculpture: 'Looking back,' James Brockman recalls,' the construction of this totem pole was a lesson of life's journeys that would follow. The interactions with the other classmates, the discipline of getting a project complete, accommodation of different ideas, and especially the discussions with Mrs. Lamberth that would determine my direction in life.'

JIM: Pvt. John S. McQueary 1900-1918

Greg Burton's announcement in CM REUNIONS Re about the gathering of Clan MacQuarrie/McQueary came to mind when I saw the following announcement about Private John S. McQueary - JIM

By "Jim"

(From the Adair County News, May 24, 1921)
Arrived from France
The remains of John S. McQueary, son of Mr. James M. McQueary, who was killed in France. arrived here last Thursday [May 18th] and were conveyed to the home of his parents who live near Ella. The funeral and burial took place at Tabernacle church on Green River. It was largely attended, the ministers--Revs. H.C. Moxley and James Burton, paying high tribute to the valor and character, of the deceased. he gave his life for his country, and a gold star is now on display at the home of his father and mother.

The memory of this young man who suffered the extreme sacrifice in Flanders Field will long be remembered and his gallantry praised. Peace to his memory and honored career, sympathy for his parents, brothers and sisters.
The August 7, 1918 News had carried this brief notice: "A message reached here Monday afternoon from the Adjutant General, and directed to James McQueary, stated that his son, John S. McQueary, had been killed in action." The Registration of Veterans' Graves for Adair Co. gives two entries for John S. McQueary, each giving the date of death as 7-18-1918 and the place of burial as Cross Road Cemetery at Christine. No entry was found for his marker in any of the volumes of Cemeteries of Adair County.

Pvt. McQueary's death certificate, issued in New Jersey at the port of debarkation of his remains, gave his birth date as January 27, 1900; his grade as Private; and stated he was a member of Company L, 28th Infantry.

- "Jim

There is mention of a "Cross Road Cemetery" in the article. If anyone has information about its location or its present day name, if different, we'd love to hear of it at CM for another list we're interested expanding, cemeteries with street and number for venues. Use the reply button, the Contact Form, with this article to submit information. -CM

Epicurean Kentuckian: A Miracle Whip man, Ben Finn, speaks up

Ben Finn's father introduced him to one of the finest sandwiches ever made. It has the requisite, Miracle Whip, but there are surprise elements, and he calls it the 'Adair Co. BLT, w/o the B or L' and, with a suggestion which should be on every menu in Adair County by law: Wash down with ice cold milk' -CM

Ben Finn writes:
Yes,I m a Miracle Whip man too;was raised on it.Your description of the ham sandwich was dead on. Dad introduced me to a great sandwich made with Miracle Whip that doesn't sound too good but I attest it's one of the finest summer sandwiches ever made. In between two slices of either white or wheat bread, spread peanut butter on one slice and a generous slather of Miracle Whip on the other. Slice a good, ripe homegrown tomato and put a couple slices in between to complete the sandwich. Wash down with ice cold milk. It's sorta the Adair Co. BLT,w/o the B or the L. --Ben Finn
