Glasgow, KY seminar offers ideas for greater gardening income

Growers interesting in selling fresh food products to high-end restaurants & consumers can learn more at this meeting in Glasgow, KY
<>"This program is being sponsored by the Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaches Institute, which I belong to," writes Barbara Armitage. "I met Tim Will while I was on a trip to North Carolina last summer - I spent the day talking with the farmers/growers/producers that participate in this program many with less than an acre in production. I was very impressed with their ability to harvest and deliver fresh fruits and vegetables to market in less than 24 hours. I think that Adair County could benefit from this program."

Submitted by Barbara Armitage

100 years later: Knifley, KY goodness report awaits thaw

COF comments on Knifley newsletter from 100 years ago, which noted, "X-mas passed more quietly this time than ever before. No drinking or shooting to any amount," as re-reported by "Jim," and the welcome change in mortality factors in that part of Adair County in the last hun'red years

COF writes:
Caught yer comment introducin' Jims article regardin' a peaceable Christmas in days of yore.

What with the snow an all we ain't too sure how we fared durin' the festivities this year. Hafta wait till hit all melts down to git a good count on how many might be left lying about so as we cain jedge the whole of the goodness or badness of hit comparative to prior years.

Carol Perkins: A Cluttered Mind

When you think about it, telling yourself not to think about it is nearly impossible, Carol Perkins finds in conscious attempt to enter nap mode
For the next earlier Carol Perkins column, see Palin, scenic Alaska, and tiring dreams

By Carol Perkins

The chill in the house swept by me like a phantom on the run, bouncing from wall to wall and ceiling to ceiling. At five in the afternoon, I wasn't in the habit of nesting in my recliner, but Guy was gone and I had nothing pressing, so I turned on the gas logs, wrapped myself in a quilt, laid my glasses aside, and settled in for a nap. Why not?

Filling your yard with beautiful song birds is fun and easy

Getting ready for the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), February 18-21, 2011 and staying ready to enjoy the Birding Capitol of Kentucky (BCK), all year long, with better feeding programs, better bird identification methods, and with attendance at one of three BCK University "Birding 101" Seminars: Details below. How author of Bird Watching had an epiphany in a small store in Madison, IN, with the introduction to "Birds of Kentucky,' by Stan Tekiela, which with a bag of black sunflower seeds, changed her life forever.

By Barbara Armitage

It's fun and easy to attract beautiful song birds to your yard the Adair County Garden Club way.

About 10 years ago I was lucky enough to find myself in a little "nature" shop in Madison, Indiana. The shop owner was friendly and extremely knowledgeable so I told her about my sad attempts to feed the birds and asked for her advice.

Poetry by Robert H. Stone: Fading, a sonnet

Fading
- a sonnet inspired by some words of Jason Driskill
The words exchanged, the thoughts explored, these keep
our daily turns a path of growing worth.
The smile unthought, the touch unplanned, these sweep
away our sadness and invite glad mirth.

What will come next, what can become, these fill
our expectations and high keen our hopes.
What might surprise, what should delight, these thrill
our souls and urge our minds to higher slopes.

If silence stays, if small neglects collect,
then separation soon will rule the day.
If gifts are spurned, if others us reject,
all will be faded pretty much away.

And only we desiring noise will hear
the stillness of the ones who disappear.

"I Don't Go To Church - Kneeling Bags my Nylons"

I was pleased to find under the Christmas tree this year a movie which I had long wanted to see. 'Twas the Billy Wilder film Ace in the Hole starring Kirk Douglas as a bent reporter out for a scoop and Jan Sterling as the restless wife of Richard Benedict, the scoop, who is trapped beneath a New Mexican mountain.

We will soon have three telephone lines from here, on to Glensfork, which is about completed, except for a few brace that are not in yet. The line to Jamestown is completed as far as Esto. The one from here to Denmark is under contemplation.

Country store closing lament and remembrance: Manton, KY

Editorial note: Bringing back these important community centers is much harder than supporting them in the first place. Wonder why it is? We think nothing of a $10 tip on a high dollar Bowling Green meal and rarely tip in a country store, but fuss about an extra quarter for a loaf of bread, conveniently close to home. Our neighborhood store has stocked that bread for us - and saved us so much more in gas, and, more importantly, time than a trip to town could save. The closing of this wonderful country store in Washington Co., KY is an all too frequent happening, an all to frequent chipping away at our heritage and an idyllized lifestyle, all because we succumb to perceived short term economies. Isn't it time to have two tip jars in community general stores and deli's: One for generous tips for employees, and a second one, even bigger, for the proprietors.-CM

'Loafers will suffer the most'

By Kenny Browning, the Feedman

One of my favorite places to stop for lunch or a cold drink closed last week after a eighty-five year run. The time of country stores dotting the crossroads of rural America has come and gone. The purpose of any business is to make a profit, and if it can't it has to go. With this being said I'm still going to miss this place.
