Poetry by Robert Stone: Chances to recast, a sonnet

Chances to recast
-a sonnet about giving thanks, by Robert Stone
Before the day of giving thanks I think
of many people, things, and happenings
but always realize a missing link
between the resting and the flapping wings.

Appointed day arrives and I recount
the lacking list of memory's recall
but bravely speak and hope this day's account
will jar remembrances both great and small.

And after feast and fun are in the past,
the I forgots begin to prick my heart
but bring again the chances to recast
this me I show, this self, this work of art.

If after thanks we are but as before,
our treasures faded foolishly we store.

- Robert Stone, 28 November 2010

Starvin' Marvin's place today

2010-11-28 - Photo by Linda Waggener. Near Center, Metcalfe Co., KY
Looking at the building today, those who don't know better might not know just what memories were made at Starvin' Marvin's store. But Geniece Marcum, author of "The Best of Senior Quest," does, and has written several anecdotes which recall its glory days.

Starvin' Marvin's: An all-time favorite story of Geniece Marcum's

by Geniece Marcum
from the book The Best of Senior Quest

Of all the stories I wrote during the ten years I contributed to the old Edmonton Herald-News , this one, headed "In and Around Sulphur Well," was my all-time favorite.

The article is reflective of all the lighthearted banter and camaraderie that went on more than a dozen years ago in the place called Starvin' Marvin's. So in memory of the place, the aged couple who struggled to operate it simply for the company of those who dropped by, and for all the colorful characters who frequented this special gathering place...

Chuck Hinman: IJMA No. 179. Lanky the cat

It's Just Me Again. No. 179 Lanky: Tallgrass Estates' Much Loved Door Cat by Chuck Hinman, about the wonderful door cat at the residence which 'went missing' - but there's a Happy postsript from the author by way of editor Robert Stone

In the olden days, large hotels had uniformed doormen who performed various nice acts for arriving or departing guests.

When Clarence Dunbar moved to Tallgrass Estates, his orange tabby cat, Lanky was often seen around the entrance where residents are constantly coming and going.

Carol Perkins: The Phil Donahue show

Phil Donahue, even though husband Guy thought him a Communist and a flaming liberal, was her favorite Tv host. She wanted to see the show since it started in 1970. She asked for tickets - and got them! 'Having those tickets in my hand was like having four tickets to the NCAA final four to a basketball fanatic.' she says

By Carol Perkins

Phil Donahue was the first noteworthy daytime talk show host and I taped and watched every episode faithfully. At nine in the morning for twenty-six years, he blazed a trail of controversial topics and brought them straight into our homes. I still miss the Phil Donahue Show.

The first episode was in 1970. I dreamed of being in the audience one day, but had no clue that I ever would. Then Guy changed jobs and this change led to his having Chicago connections (sounds like the Mafia), and a reason to be there each year. Click, the switch turned on!

100 Years Ago: adieu Thanksgiving, hello Christmas

Miscellaneous news; and the great piano contest. A Thanksgiving feast at The Lindsey Wilson.

By "Jim

Amidst the usual assortment of obituaries and marriages and the report of a quasi-sensational shooting scrape in the Fry community of Green County, a number of post-Thanksgiving articles dotted the front page of the November 30,1910 edition of the News, one of which stated simply that "Thanksgiving was generally observed in Columbia. The business houses were closed at the eleven o'clock hour and everybody attended services at the Christian church."

Tom Chaney. No. 036: Welcome to Catfish Bend

Of Writers and Their Books. No. 036 Welcome to Catfish Bend about writer Ben Lucien Burman
The next earlier Tom Chaney essay, Literature and the plague

By Tom Chaney

Welcome to Catfish Bend

I don't like to give the impression that I am beholden to every writer who can find the 'on' button on a computer. So when Jesse Mountjoy suggested that I write about Ben Lucien Burman and his Catfish Bend stories, I was skeptical.

So I began to read Ben Lucien Burman to find out just who he is -- or was - he died in 1984 at the age of 88. The fact that I did not know anything about Burman is just a tribute to my massive ignorance - a condition which Brother Mountjoy will be quick to confirm.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Small town virtues

ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor. This column originally appeared in November 2005, in the Munfordville, KY, Hart County Herald and is reprinted here with the permission of the author. It was last posted for Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009, but seems just appropriate for the Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday season. -EW

Some thoughts on small town virtues

Several years back, at a mission study that took place at First United Methodist Church in Munfordville, a discussion question asked us to think about differences among urban, small town and rural lifestyles. We shared a number of insights and images, recalling circumstances that simply dont occur in big cities.

Corky, a Jack Russell Mix is missing

George Johnson writes:
Ed, I have looked everywhere and cannot find my little beloved Corkey dog. He is a Jack Russell but does not look a lot like one. He has a white body with a black mask face and his big black ears stand straight up. He also has his full tail. I miss him greatly. If anyone has seen him or has him please call me at (270) 634-2667. Please help me find Corkey. Thank You -George Johnson

(Flyers for missing pets are run as paid advertising.) We have also made available, at no charge, listings for pets for the local animal shelter at no charge, even though they have an adoption fee. This is done in the interest of seeing fewer animals euthanized, and in the interest of reducing the considerable taxpayer dollars from Adair, Metcalfe, and Russell Counties which subsidize the operation.
