The COF: Tom Chaney commits baseball heresy

Horse Cave bookseller has destroyed his credit with The Crusty Ole Fool for all time with latest columns. Now - fair warning - The COF vows to leave paradise in Knifley and find out for himself what's going on near the Ole Catalpa tree in Hart Co, KY
About: Tom Chaney, So Open to Infinity

The COF

For some time I've hung on every word the Chief Shelf Duster at Horse Cave had to say about books. But dang-nab-it if he hasn't gone and destroyed his credit for all time.

He says for years he has "...been a mild fan of baseball."

Now any self respecting southern boy with sand twixt his toes jest knows thet thar is no such thing as a mild fan of baseball!

The ceremony took place in the Rose Garden of the Trabue Russell House in downtown Columbia, KY.

It provided a spectacular setting for their wedding.

Random Thoughts from North of the River

Baseball player Zach Davis Wheat, who played at Brooklyn with Cy Barger, was distant kinsman of Adair County born-All American/Major League Star Steve Hamilton

By "Jim"

Since I moved north of the Green River and into the God-forsaken eastern time zone sometime around 1812, it's always an hour later than it should be, even when I arise an hour early. Alas, I flunked out of the Jethro Bodine School of Higher Cyphering and Gideon Bible Sales, so figuring all that out will have to be left to someone considerably smarter than I am.

But I digress.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Attention paid

Attention paid
- a sonnet about being in one's place by Robert Stone
Forgotten in the hurry of the now
Can one remembrance missing shake the past?
Some may survive long silence anyhow
but daily minding, closeness binds more fast.

Passed over for convenience of the new
Can one transaction seal the fate of old?
Some may not miss the knowing how are you?
and miss sincere concern as goods are sold.

Abandoned often are the pleasures nigh.
Can many wanders take the place of home?
Some may appear with wonders satisfied
yet with despair will search old paths to roam.

Alas, at last we think, as all things fade,
If only more attention had been paid.

- Robert Stone, 27 June 2010

Tom Chaney: So Open to Infinity

Of Writers and Their Books,: 27 June 2010, So open to Infinity A revised book review of baseball books from 24 May 2009. Our intrepid columnist has got the summer blahs. Nigh 100 degree heat, plus a case of the can't-help-its, in addition to the prospect of a week's vacation in the wiles of coastal Georgia have caused him to sull up. We are dipping into the file for a favorite column or so from the past.-Robert Stone.

So Open to Infinity

For years I have been a mild fan of baseball.

In junior high and high school I was a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers mainly because my best friend - a friendship newly minted because of school consolidation - was a Yankee fan.

Also in junior high the principal took the school boy patrol crew to see the old Louisville Colonels play. I remember catching a foul ball. I thought the trip was nice, but small compensation for our duties on the corner of Ky. 70 and U. S. 31-W where daily we saved the lives of countless elementary urchins and braved the obscenities of pretty ladies in their new convertibles.

Carol Perkins: Feeling Like Myself

It's been so long since she felt like herself, Carol Perkins says, that she doesn't remember what it was like.
Next previous Carol Perkins column: Churches

By Carol Perkins

I haven't felt like myself lately.

As a matter of fact, I have forgotten what myself feels like. This is one of those saying that makes no sense, but everyone understands.

Chuck Hinman, IJMA No. 139: What I Miss Most

Chuck Hinman recalls the things he misses most about the too brief 50 year marriage with his beloved Connie, a romance cut short when her life and sweet voice were cruelly silenced shortly after his retirement. "What I miss most is drifting off to sleep holding her hand and her still telling me about her exciting day!," he says, of the woman who listened only to Christian radio plus Kitchen Klatter, and who spoke personally of One she knew so well, Jesus. Chuck Hinman recalls the things he now misses most from the fleeting 50 years of their married life together
The next earlier Chuck Hinman story My First Dance Is Chuck Hinman your favorite Sunday with CM columnist, as many tell us? If so, we hope you'll drop him a line by email. Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net

by Chuck Hinman

At the risk of being called a "sentimental old fool," I'm going to tell you what I miss most as the years roll by. It's Connie's constant chattering about "her day" as she went about putting the finishing touches on our suppers.

I was just a few feet away reading the evening paper. I would throw out an occasional "Oh really" to make her think I was hanging on her every word when I was doing what many husbands do. It's called selective hearing.

Schmuel Gelbfisz was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1882. After leaving his homeland alone, barefoot and penniless at 16, he spent some time with relatives in England before emigrating to Canada at the beginning of the new century. (While in England he had begun using the more English sounding name of Samuel Goldfish.) Coming to New York at the turn of the 20th century, he found work with folks from Eastern Europe who were in the garment industry.
