Teen Pregnancy rate in Lake Cumberland Area is concern All counties except Casey in Lake Cumberland Area District are above state and national average in teen pregnancy rates. Lake Cumberland District Health Departments say turnaround can be most effective in home, with parents taking more responsibility to teach children about consequences of relationships News from Lake Cumberland District Health Department Teen pregnancy is a concern for Lake Cumberland citizens. According to surveys recently performed at community health summits around Kentucky, teen pregnancy ranks right up there with heart disease, diabetes, obesity and drug use. Statistics support the cause for alarm. Kentucky ranks among the highest in the United States for teen pregnancy. Further, the U.S. has the highest rate of teen pregnancies in the world when compared to other industrialized countries. In spite of the fact that 30% of teen pregnancies end in abortion, Kentucky's teens continue to have high birth rates. In our district for the year 2008, the birth rate for 15-19 year old teens, per 1,000, was as follows, listed from best (lowest) to worst (highest): The rate per thousand for Japan is 2, for spain, 8; Australia, 18, and the United Kingdom, 30. Pam Dailey votes to keep blackberry eating simple! Includes confession that her husband is a blackberry complicator, whose elaborate consumption process requires too much equipment. And she still needs help finding her dog. She compliments the oz of CM, but we admit - on the jump so not too many will know about it -who really deserves the credit Ed, About blackberries, I vote right out of a bowl, cold, with my fingers. Pickett's Chapel Car Wash, Cookout closes at 4:45pmCT The successful Pickett's Chapel United Methodist Church Youth Car Wash, Cookout and Corn Toss is over at 4:35pmCT, Lindsey Young announced. The fundraiser had been originally scheduled to continue to 6pmCT, but, Lindsey Young, one of the events organizers, said, "The kids are really tired from all the cars they washed and it's so hot, we decided to shut down just a little early." The proceeds from the event are still being tallied, but appear to be over $750, with promises likely to raise the figure to even more. The kids still need a few hundred dollars to pay for the trip to New Song Festival at Camp Loucon, Young said, but she expects other late donations to make up the difference. "You know," she added, "the idea that a child shall lead really has meaning in this community. The grown-ups in our church never cease to be surprised at just how much they can inspire. They are energetic. They show leadership in the community. They help keep the roads clean. But most important," she said, "is that they add so much to the spiritual side of Pickett's Chapel. They all can pray so beautifully, and put thoughts into words in such different and better ways." "We're thankful for them. And we are thankful to all who supported the kids today," she said. Those who weren't able to get to the car wash and would like to help can do so by calling Lindsey Young at (270) 378-1278. 2010-06-26 17:54:29 | Comments | Printable version
A kitchen tragedy: A failed blackberry cobbler It failed because the rare ingredients were et by the chef. However, be forewarned: M.E. Lewis has laid plans to beat all the rest of y'all to the Farmers Market on Tuesday. And this time she shan't yield to temptation and a cobbler will be About: A vote for Blackberry Cobbler with ice cream By M.E. Lewis I bought a large bowl of really good large blackberries from the local farmers market yesterday thinking I would make a cobbler. However, as I was putting up corn and green beans, I ate almost all of them one at a time. They were sweet enough that I didn't have to put any sweetener on them. I will be at the farmers market early Tuesday morning to see if they have any more and try again to make a cobbler. M.E> Lewis 2010-06-26 10:20:05 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Food
