Writer thinks roads here beautiful, but more challenging

About: Are tree-car collisions more common in Kentucky

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Could it be the roads are way more challenging than in other areas.

I have lived many places and I don't recall more challenging roads than in this part of the state.

There is not too much place to get off the road, at no fault of anybody, so therefore, more wrecks. That's just the way it is. Overcorrection is cause of most of the accidents. It just seems to be the way it is.

I just hope I have preached it to my girls to watch this and remember it when it happens what to do. We just love the roads and deal with the beautiful roads and sites we have, and hope for the best.

Are tree/car collisions more common in Kentucky?

About: Vehicle leaves KY 80 roadway strikes tree

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Does this type of accident happen more often in Kentucky than in any other state? Are there any statistics proving this?

Would the cause most likely be speed, reckless driving, drinking of alcoholic beverages, drug use or just plain careless driving?

I think we could rule out heavy traffic!

s/Charles Marshburn

A very good question. You may have a point. In the last year or two I've noticed a much higher incidence of stationery objects hitting my vehicles than used to happen. Sometimes it is my wife's van. The other day it was a wing wall on a driveway turn around. And yes, even trees have harelipped my bumpers. I know of nothing I've done to offend any of these. I'd think this anecdotal evidence of much more scientific value than statistics. You know how people lie with statistics. Anymore it seems like a social security check isn't big enough to pay the body shop, much less stay in hearing aid batteries. -EW

Adair Fiscal Court rejects surveillance camera bids

Court opts to rewrite specs for cheaper but more expandable system. Committee including Deputy Jailer Eric Antle and Magistrates Goodin, Hadley, and Baker, will visit jails using alternate surveillance system. Court unanimously approves 2010-11 budget. Agenda item to give CJE Ann Melton authorization to sign paperwork for road improvements tabled.

By Ed Waggener

The Adair Fiscal Court rejected two bids received this morning and to opted rebid with new specifications for surveillance cameras at the Adair County Regional Jail.

The court received two bids for the system as advertised:
  • AAA Systems, Bowling Green, KY $51,850.00
  • Vision Communications, Columbia, KY - $53,850.00
AAA Systems also included a bid for an alternate system which did not meet the bid specifications, but which was more to the magistrates liking.

The alternate system is cheaper - around $45,000 - and it offers expandability which the rejected bid announcements did not. The court voted to tailor the new bid around the specifications in the AAA Systems proposal for the alternate system.

Columbia City Council passes 2010-2011 budget

Technically, it's balanced, but new budget, passed 4-2, dips into city's reserves. Budget leaves CACEDA (with conditions) and Chamber stipends in place. City employees' 5% pay increase remains. City Gas Department remains a contentious issue.

By Ed Waggener

The Columbia City Council passed a $1,759,197 budget, yesterday afternoon, but the vote was not unanimous.

The budget is balanced, but to do so, $112,747 will be used from the City's Reserve Fund. Revenues are projected at $1,646,350 for the coming year.
