Columbia Real Estate Appraiser, Broker and Auctioneer Murrell Burton was one of the happy show goers at the 14th Annual Russell Creek Gas Engine & Tractor Show, who at the moment was about to appraise the food at Doug Campbell's cook house. His official critique isn't in, but almost everyone agreed the polish sausage, ribeye sandwiches, and country ham was excellent.

The time a teenager was really beating Yank Loy at checkers

About: James Yank Loy in front of Jot 'em Down Store photo by his daughter, Donita Hortillosa

By Jason Stone
I didn't live but a minute by bicycle away from the store. When I was about thirteen or so, feeling my oats because I had reached a point where I could beat my grandpa George at the game, I pedaled on down to Yank's and decided I wanted to play him in a game of checkers.

That was my first mistake.

For about fifteen minutes afterwards, Yank greeted any customers with "wow, this boy is really beating me at checkers," while he jumped and double-jumped my pieces.

I did a pen-and-ink of the store when I was in high school.

I need to find it and see how to scan it and send it in. -Jason Stone, Marietta, GA
Thanks for sharing the great memories of Sparksville; and yes, we hope you do find the art to share as well. -EW

How Change for Life was such a success

Two ACES kids, Kaitlyn Grant and Brooklyn Coomer, approached the school's assistant principal with a fund raiser to help the family of a deeply loved Adair County. The result of a whirlwind campaign at Adair Elementary amazed veteran fundraisers, and proved that the next generations are definitely making Adair County A Good Place to Call Home.

By Robbie Harmon

Adair County is definitely a "good place to call home". In the month of May alone, Adair Countians always give thousands of dollars to such worthwhile causes, Relay for Life and Crusade for Children. Anytime that a need arises, Adair Countians have always stepped up to support their own. When our band needed support to make the trip to Macy's, Adair Countians were there. When our academic team needed support to help fund their recent trip to Nationals, Adair Countians were there.

Taste of Chicago is this weekend

What Columbia's food competition is up to
To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

The taste of Chicago starts this week. If you ever thought about visiting, this is the week to do so. There is also a story about Chicago food on chicagosuntimes.com if you want to check it out!

Big Al, the Epicurean Big Rig Trucker

Thanks, for keeping us posted on what the competition is up to. If anybody has to be in Chicago this weekend, this is a good idea. Our understanding is that Chicago is trying to become known, too, as a place where excellent food is served, just as first and foremost that's Adair County's claim to fame. -EW.
