Columbia, KY native Barry Dunn top graduate at UL

He is son of Bernie and Debbie Dunn. Will practice commerical litigation with law firm of Stoll Keenon Ogden, Louisville, KY

Columbia native Barry Dunn recently graduated the University of Louisville's Brandeis School of Law as Outstanding University Graduate. The school's top award recognizes the academic, leadership, and service efforts of one student from each of the University of Louisville's twelve academic units.

While at Louisville Law, Dunn served as President of the Moot Court Board, Notes Editor for the University of Louisville Law Review, two-time member of the National Moot Court team, American Bar Association Representative, Academic Support Center Tutor, and Research Assistant to two Distinguished University Scholars.

He also won the Justice Charles Leibson Award as outstanding constitutional law student, the Kentucky Bar Association Student Writing Competition, Stites & Harbison Leadership Award, and was inducted into the Brandeis Honor Society.

Dunn will now practice commercial litigation with Stoll Keenon Ogden in Louisville. He is the son of Bernie and Debbie Dunn of Columbia.

Mrs. Pansy Pierce, age 72, of Elizabethtown, KY, formerly of Greensburg, KY, passed away on Monday in Louisville at the Norton Suburban Hospital.

The funeral service for Mrs. Pansy Pierce will be conducted Thursday, June 10, 2010, at 2pmCT at the Union Chapel Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Church Cemetery. The family requests visitation from 3:30-8pm on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, and after 7 AM Thursday at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home in Greensburg and after 1pmCT, Thursday, June 10, 2010, at the church.

Grandson of Russell Springs resident
awarded Robert C Byrd Honors Scholarship

Bennett Coffey, the grandson of Ruby Coffey of Russell Springs, has been awarded a Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship valued at $1,500 a year.

Coffey, a 2010 graduate of Woodford County High School, will attend Virginia Tech to study aerospace engineering.

In last night's City Council meeting, Columbia Mayor Pat Bell saved his biggest news for last: He will not seek re-election in 2010.

The news became evident as the Mayor began a review of the accomplishments of his administration and gave thanks to members of the administration, the Council, and Community leaders.

The mayor cited personal health reasons as his primary reason for leaving the job. He said that if he were 10 years younger, he could not be running away from City Hall.

But he said, "I don't think I need to be Mayor after the last of the year. I will not run for Mayor."

13th Annual Reunion of Conover School well attended

May 29, 2010, 33 students and 33 friends attended the 13th annual Conover School reunion. Each year, those who attended this one-room schoolhouse gather together at the school on Saturday before Memorial Day to reminisce and enjoy a pot-luck meal. Conover School is located on Freedom Church Road and now serves as Freedom Separate Baptist Church fellowship hall. Pictured in the photo sent with this article are former students who attended this year's reunion.

We have entered our Purple Glove video in a contest. Each time the video is viewed, we get a vote. The contest runs through July 31, 2010.

The winning video gets $5000.00 donated to their Relay.

We got a late start, and are 26,000 votes down. I believe with the effort that this community puts behind our Relay I think we have a good shot at winning.

BJF says Miller Park black birds are Grackles

I believe this is the Common Grackle, locally known as a Blackbird. It is, in my opinion, a Grackle of some kind.

Starlings do not have black legs or black beaks. Their body type is more pudgy than Grackles.
