Bro. Randy Brown living to give, leaving a legacy

About: The Story of Lynne-Vie by Janella Brown

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

This is an amazing story that is heart-wrenching and heart-lifting at the same time.

Thank you, Janella for writing and sharing it.

My pastor's theme this morning was on leaving a legacy and that we should all "live to give".

Randy is certainly living to give and leaving a legacy not only for his family but families all over the world.

Thank you again for sharing this, it truly touched my heart.

s/Patty Jones

Daylilies and Crusade

2010-05-30 - Photo by Tom Waggener. Downtown Columbia, KY
In the distance, a great tradition of the Columbia-Adair County Fire Department continues with the crusade road block at the interesction of Jamestown Street and the Public Square, with Dennis Loy being interviewed by Ed Waggener, and Chris Bragg and Mike Glasgow ready to take money for the the Crusade for Children. In the foreground, and all around the Square , the daylilies planted and maintained by another outstanding Columbia organization, the Adair County Garden Club. One can almost imagine Gordon McRae riding by on his horse singing "Oh What a Beautiful Morning," on this Sunday, May 30, 2010. Another great day to be in Adair County, KY. Suggestions on finding military records

About: Wants to know authority on Veteranspast and present of Adair Co., KY

By "Jim"

I'm a far cry from being an expert on military records, but there are a couple of sources Mr. Patton may want to check.

One is the National [Military] Personnel Records Center website. Included at this site is a printable form (Standard Form 180) to request military service records.

Memorial Day Observance marred
by appalling behavior of a few motorists

Maybe Adair County has no more discourteous drivers than other American locales, there are too many. Behavior at Memorial Day service today shows once again and all too often how badly noisy, speeding, and threatening vehicle operation needs immediate attention of law enforcement, city and county leaders, business leaders and Chamber of Commerce, religious and education leaders, and local media. -EW

By Cathy Luttrell

Monday is the day for our great country to honor all of the men and women who have fought and died here at home and on lands far away. I have tried to instill in my two sons, ages 23 and 11, that this is a very special occasion and is not to be taken lightly. These fallen soldiers deserve the respect of all American of all ages.

Sunday, May 30, 2010, Columbia VFW Post 6097 held their annual Memorial Day Service at the fairgrounds. This is the one day of the year that citizens of this county gather to pay tribute to fellow comrades, family members and friends. The ceremony is held at the gates to the fairgrounds where a monument stands honoring fallen Adair countians.

Cycling Adair Co., KY: A 30 miler starting down Ky 704

Seeing Adair Co. at 19.8 mph: Choosing among the great options for biking in Adair County is difficult, but a 30 (28.7) miler down 704, across Harvey's Ridge, over Wheeler Hill and through the Flatwoods then across Jones Chapel Road - seemingly built for cyclists with its great shoots which yielded maximum speed of 47 mph - and then on KY 80 to Lampton Lane and in via Greensburg ST via the campus which gave young lad the finest 12 years of public schooling in Kentucky filled the bill.

By Tom Waggener

In celebration of our first wedding anniversary, Teresa and I decided to visit columbia and then go get some much needed R and R in Smiths Grove, KY. I was excited by the opportunity to revisit some of my old cycling turf on Sunday morning before we headed out.

Choosing just one route in Adair County is really difficult. I needed a 30 miler with some challenging hills and great vistas that would get me home in time for lunch.

After some discussion with dad, who wanted to short change me with a measly 20 miler, I decided to:

Wants to know authority on Veterans
past and present of Adair Co., KY

Mr. Waggener,

Who in Adair County is an authority on Adair County Veterans past and present, including all wars?

I am attempting to locate the military records of a gentleman who has been dead for several years and who told me he served briefly in the military.

My purpose in wanting this information is to secure a military monument to mark his burial site.

s/Paul Patton

The Story of Lynne-Vie

After four trips to Haiti, Columbia Pharmacist and Minister Randy Brown and his best friend thought they'd never be needed there again. But the earthquake January 12, 2010, changed that. What follows is the story, the writer says, of the Hand of God working through some remarkable circumstances to let a young Haitian amputee walk again. The story shows, the writer says, that "We all can see miracles every day if we will just pay attention. This just doesn't only happen in Haiti, but it can happen in Columbia, too.

Well, I guess it all started when Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana.

I know that seems an odd place to start when this story is about a girl from Haiti, but that's when it began for Randy.

Heat Lightning

Early in the morning of October 1, 1910, an explosion destroyed the building of the Los Angeles Times. Twenty-one people were killed. At first the blast was attributed to a careless match igniting a gas leak. Soon it became clear that a bomber had been at work.

Howard Blum, a contributing editor to Vanity Fair, without a blush stretches this event into what some yellow journalists of the time labeled it: "The Crime of the Century." This name was given before Lee Harvey Oswald, the Mansons, the Watergate gang, Hitler, and James Earl Ray; and with only ninety years to go in the century. And I don't recall such 21st century appellations given to the West Virginia mine disaster or the current British Petroleum debacle off the oily coast of Louisiana.

Verse two of the hymn, "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing," begins with a biblical citation: "Here I raise mine Ebenezer; hither by thy help I'm come..." The Ebenezer of the song is a biblical site referenced in I Samuel 7. The Bible story there describes how Samuel leads the Israelites in sacrifice and prayer for God's help as the forces of the Philistines bear down upon them. God frightens the Philistines into disarray with a barrage of divine thunder; the panicky Philistines are then routed and utterly defeated by the Israelites.

In 1960 I had some mysterious chest pains. My doctor ordered an EKG and it showed I had had a heart attack. It was mild but I was only 38.

We had already adopted our son Paul and were waiting for a baby girl (Mary Ann) to complete our family. It was no time for me to have health problems.

Poetry by Robert Stone
Blamed and Blameless

Blamed and Blameless
-a birthday sonnet for Christopher Wendell Comperry by Robert Stone
Just when I met most persons whom I know
is lost in unremembered time and place,
a chance encounter or a daily flow
alike the first time gone without a trace.

For just a few initial contacts burn,
igniting personal eternal flames,
the lights though dimmed that ever will return
and flare to hear both blamed and blameless names.

How blessed if I should meet a mirror mate
who understood the achings of my heart,
who needed understanding to create,
who felt my joy that others shared our art.

Let me while wasted words distress confess,
accept that one wants more the other less.
