Chuck Hinman, IJMA No. 013: Funniest Weddings It's Just Me Again 013: Funniest Weddings. The next earlier Chuck Hinman story Small Town Cemeteries Is Chuck Hinman your favorite Sunday with CM columnist, as many tell us? If so, we hope you'll drop him a line by email. Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net By Chuck Hinman Television offerings are replete with shows whose themes are the "funniest this or that." Some day it will be discovered that weddings are a field ripe for harvest in the "funniest" category, something I have been involved in as a church pianist-organist for over 60 years. Here are two of my entries. The female vocalist was in the final approach of warbling "The Lord's Prayer." She had just nailed the high C near the end of the song when a ceiling speaker, chose this moment to crash to the floor. Sparks and weird electrical noises almost drowned out the vocalist. The crashing speaker cabinet narrowly missed her but she didn't miss a note! Notes on Limericks By Billy Joe Fudge Limericks were and most times are both vulgar and humorous which, I think, masks the true magnetism which makes them stick in our heads and that is of course the melodic nine-nine-six-six-nine rhyming form. This form is easy to remember and repeat much like breathing which is easy to repeat without giving it any thought or riding a bicycle, etc. Those folks who advertise could benefit from a catchy limerick for sure. Catchy ad phrases can quickly become a part of pop culture especially in a world filled with instant communication apparatus. -BJF Thanks, BJF. If Columbia, KY, is to keep the title of Limerick Capital of the United States, we hope you, and your followers, keep them coming. -Ed 2010-05-23 11:04:03 | Comments | Printable version
Anonymous Russell Countian at it again, Steering things up A native of Buckle of Bible Belt, from within the Sacred Triangle of Russell County: Sano, Ono and Esto, opines outspokenly on ponderous whisky/whiskey issue now on the table Mr. Editor, I feel honor-bound to respond to Mr. Bonifer's learned comment about whisky/whiskey. As a native of the area roughly bounded by Sano, Ono, and Esto, and as a world-class traveler who's been as far north as Dunnville and nearly as far west as Milltown, I unequivocally state that there is unto this day a sufficient number of folks of Scottish descent in our part of the state to distill a small river of whisky "by the light of the silvery moon." In general, this whisky is of a much superior quality to the whiskey produced in the same hills and hollows by those of Irish, English, German, and French descent. Or so I'm told. Carol Perkins: Let's Talk About...Flour Sack Dresses An episode on Project Runway brought back memories of flour sack dresses, and a wonderful column filled with nostalgic remarks from writer's Facebook friends, Peggy Spradlin, Mary Alice Yokley, Romana Murrell, Louise Firkins, Freda Duggar, Gaye Berry and Patty Hughes, along with a look at what future popular fashion holds Next previous Carol Perkins column: Let's Talk About . . . Field Hockey By Carol Perkins My favorite TV show is Project Runway. Not that I think the designs are lovely, because most of them are not, but the show holds my attention. Each week designers are given a task, some of which are ridiculous, but their job is to "make do" with what they have and create a winning design. They must also sew their own creations. One week they were given potato sacks (burlap bags) and were told to create something to wear to a party. For some reason, this made me think of flour sack dresses and how mothers during the Depression, and even later, made dresses and shirts from printed flour sacks and feed sacks. Tom Chaney No. 255:Rolling Down the Rivers Of Writers and Their Books, No. 255: 23 May 2010, a review of books on Rolling Down the Rivers The next earlier Tom Chaney column, an essay on It's Not That We Forgot.... We Never Knew By Tom Chaney Email: Tom Chaney bookstore@scrtc.com Rolling Down the Rivers In 1937 editor Constance Lindsay Skinner outlined a brave new series of books for Farrar & Rinehart. That year her firm published Kennebec: Cradle of Americans by Robert P. Tristram Coffin thus launching their Rivers of America project. In an essay in the early volumes Skinner described the series as follows: "This is to be a literary and not a historical series. The authors of these books will be novelists and poets. On them, now in America, as in all lands and times, rests the real responsibility of interpretation. If the average American is less informed about his country than any other national, knows and cares less about its past and about its present in all sections but the one where he resides, it is because books prepared for his instruction were not written by artists."Skinner planned twenty-four volumes. The series extended to sixty-five over the next 37 years. She died whilst editing the sixth volume. The series extended beyond the lifetime of two publishing companies. In 1946 Farrar & Rinehart became Rinehart & Co. which in 1960 became Holt, Rinehart & Winston.
