It's a story with an almost blissful outcome. But when their beautiful son had problems after first feeding, his tiny fingers and toes turning gray and cold, the family was so frightened. Now with a wonderful outcome, they are so thankful for the kindness they received at Kosair Children's Hospital. That's why they're urging everyone in Adair County to support the Baby So Soft blanket campaign now. The campaign has been extended to 4pmCT, Friday, May 14, 2010.

KY Afield Outdoors: Spring squirrel season nearing 17th Year

By Art Lander, Jr.
News from KY Fish and Wildlife

Squirrel hunting is a Kentucky tradition that dates back to the pioneer era.

But hunting squirrels in the spring is relatively new. The season started as an experiment on four state wildlife management areas in 1994, and went statewide in 1999.

"Squirrels are our most stable and abundant small game species," said Ben Robinson, wildlife biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

By Donna Shirley
Adair Co. Middle School 7th Grade Social Studies teacher
My 4th period class and I are embarking on a quest to explore early Adair County History. While we have Mike Watson and Ruth Paull Burdette's books at our disposal, we'd love to hear from your readers.

This year's class is concentrating on Adair County in its infancy. We would like to learn more about the following, dating back to the earliest existence of our community:
  • Agriculture
  • Landmarks
  • Education
  • Religion
  • Economy Population
  • Medicine
  • Government Formation of the county
  • People
  • Major Events
  • Folklore Entertainment/recreation
We're interested in historical documentation, stories passed down through families, maps, and any other information your readers would like to share.

We felt that Columbia Magazine would provide a wonderful means of gathering information as well as sharing our history with the community.

Thanks in advance to you and your readers for your help in this endeavor. -Donna Shirley, c/o> Adair County Middle School, 322 General John Adair DR,Columbia, KY 42728-1878

Kentucky Color: Front Porch frog

The front porch frog, or Gray Tree Frog, has a coat of many colors, which changes to match its surroundings, though more slowly than a chameleon
For next earlier Kentucky Color, see Kentucky Color: Landing Zone Alert

By Billy Joe Fudge
Retired District Forester, Kentucky Division of Forestry

This Front Porch Frog often referred to as a Tree Frog appears to be hanging on for dear life to the woodbox but in reality is just pulling himself over the top.

This is a Gray Tree Frog, but as you can tell they much like a chameleon can change colors as to their surroundings. Their color changing process is much slower than a chameleon, however.

Tom Chaney drove to Lindsey Wilson College to see one of his favorite plays, Jean Anouilh's Antigone directed by Robert Brock, directory of the Kentucky Repertory Theatre in Horse Cave.
